Diffusion Modelling of Nb3Sn Superconducting Wires 35m

Presentation summarising work performed during a technical student project.

      Abstract:

High-field (16T) magnet designs for the proposed future circular collider (FCC) impose challenging performance targets for superconducting wires, which cannot currently be achieved with commercially available material of the type used for the HL-LHC. In the context of the FCC Study, several manufacturers and research institutes are developing novel designs of Nb3Sn superconducting wire. To optimize the design and heat treatment of these wires, it is necessary to understand the real geometry of these complex multifilamentary composite wires after deformation processing, and to analyse the processes that occur during heat treatment to form the superconducting phase.

In this project, computational models to analyse diffusional transport, phase transformations and dimensional changes in these wires during the heat treatment process have been developed. In particular, preliminary numerical approaches for predicting the change in resistance due to Sn leaks to the cryostabilizer, the phase development during low temperature binary Cu− Sn reactions and grain boundary diffusion in the Nb3Sn phase have been assessed.

Simultaneously, procedures are developed for analysing and quantitatively describing the geometry of real samples, using a combination of optical and electron microscopy, and image analysis. The final long term aim of this work is to give clear and quantitative recommendations for changes in the design and heat treatment of prototype Nb3Sn conductors.
