Preload and training in HL LHC Nb3Sn magnets for particle accelerators

Abstract
Since the Tevatron epoque, the design of superconducting magnets for particle accelerators is based on a mechanical preload of the coil equivalent to the full Lorentz forces at nominal current. This preload aims at avoiding the detachment of the coil from the winding pole during energization, to reduce the risk of quench due to coil movements, and to avoid changes of field quality. Indeed, the experience in the construction of several magnet models shows that a magnet can still train well above the current corresponding at the mechanical preload. In this paper we review the experience of the Nb3Sn magnets build in the framework of the HL LHC project, namely 3 short model quadrupoles and 6 short model dipoles with operational peak field in the coil of the order of 12 T. A complete overview of the data relative to mechanical measurements of pole unloading, field quality and of the training behaviour is given.
