Description

Mixing and CP violation studies are promising areas to look for contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In the charm sector, the expected SM predictions are small, but notoriously difficult to calculate. Experimental measurements thus seek to probe tiny effects, demanding large data samples and excellent control of systematic uncertainties. Using unprecedentedly large samples of charm mesons, LHCb has recently observed CP violation in the charm sector and made the world’s most precise measurement of the mixing parameter x. These recent results will be discussed, starting with an introduction and overview of the SM prediction, followed by a presentation of the LHCb results. Finally, a discussion of the effect on the world average and implications for new physics contributions is presented.
