Idea Circle Dinner Discussion #13:
How to watch 1000 short films this weekend without losing your mind – Reflections on 10 years of the CineGlobe Film Festival at CERN
Neal Hartman (Director) and Alex Brown (Administrator) will talk about their experiences running the CineGlobe Film Festival at CERN, including the daunting task of watching around 1000 short films for each edition. What makes a good short, what makes a good short inspired by science, and what are some of the pitfalls of short filmmaking? They will also speak about CineGlobe’s evolution over the past 10 years, about its plans for the tenth edition next summer, and about how you can become involved in this burgeoning celebration of cinema and science.
About the speakers:
Neal is an engineer and has been working for the ATLAS Experiment since 2000. He also has a Masters in Film Directing and is currently splitting his time between engineering for the ATLAS upgrade and pursuing a PhD at EPFL in Virtual Reality, in conjunction with the local communications group at CERN. He co-founded CineGlobe in 2007 and has been the director and president of the CineGlobe Association since 2012.
Alex is a freelance consultant in science communication. Alongside roles in CERN’s fundraising, photo archive, and hands-on education teams, he spent 2012-18 volunteering for numerous public outreach events. Alex has been supporting CineGlobe since 2014, watching countless films and presenting them to the festival audience, as well as communicating with partners to deliver a successful event.
