Description

GLASGOW, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!
An emergency calibration mission for the European Space Agency led to the development of one of the most sophisticated laser systems on this planet.
In 2016, the European Space Agency called M Squared in Glasgow, Scotland. They had run into significant problems calibrating TROPOMI, the spectrometer onboard their Sentinel 5-Precursor satellite and it was only a few months away from launch. This €350 million project was to be the first planned Copernicus mission dedicated to observing and mapping a multitude of critical atmospheric pollutants that impact our health and affect our climate.
Join Dr Matt Edgar on Wednesday 11 December to find out how the team at M Squared handled this exciting but non-standard re-calibration project, and what it was like working on a high-value instrument that was already integrated into the spacecraft, in a clean room, where several other high-value satellites were being assembled. Matt will also describe the development of a series of extremely complex laser systems that have since been developed for the spectral calibration of imaging spectrometers that underpin several important space missions. These new systems offer unrivalled performance, and they include fully-automated, single-frequency, broadly-tunable high-power lasers spanning 260-2700 nm - all uniquely configurable - and a reliable platform upon which optics labs can significantly advance their research.

ABOUT M SQUARED:
M Squared is a multi-award-winning photonics and quantum technology company. For over a decade, it has provided the world’s purest light in the form of advanced laser technology to enable scientific progress and power industry. Its laser systems are working to realise the potential of the coming quantum age, improve healthcare and provide the scientific understanding to help halt climate change. The company’s expertise spans CW to fs and DUV to THz wavelengths. M Squared employs more than 120 people and has offices in the UK, Europe and USA.

ABOUT DR MATT EDGAR
Matt has a background in experimental research spanning quantum optics, computational imaging and gravitational wave detection techniques. He joined M Squared in October 2018 as the Product Owner managing the team that delivered the laser sources for Sentinel 5 mission optical ground support equipment.
