POLAR-2 biweekly meeting

Europe/Zurich
Description

Agenda:

- Update from Geneva regarding PRODEX

- Update from Geneva on module design

- Update from IHEP

- Update from MPE

- Update from NCBJ

- Discussion on how to proceed with CSU

Attendance:

Geneva: Nicolas P, Nicolas dA, Xin, Merlin

Poland: Agnieszka

IHEP: Jianchao

Funding:

- Update from Geneva by Xin: The PRODEX funding approval is now starting at ESA. 2 documents were sent which they will consider in the coming weeks. In parallel they mentioned they will contact the Polish delegates to safe time.

- Agnieszka confirms that this will help the progress in Poland where 2 different ministries have to agree.

- Merlin will forward the ESA document from Geneva to Agnieszka since they will likely be requested to write something similar soon.

Geneva Module Design:

- Merlin presents simulation results for the scintillator bar length optimization. Results confirm previous simulations that the optimum length is significantly shorter than that used previously in POLAR. This is independent on the background distribution. Currently foreseen scintillator length will be 125 mm.

- Nicolas dA shows the progress module design. Plastic grids were produced to hold the new scintillator design in place (scintillators without truncation). First results look good, although they will have the be painted. Paint tests will be performed in the coming weeks.

- Meeting tomorrow in Geneva to finalize scintillator bar design, subsequently we can ask for a quote from the producer (probably significantly cheaper than first request). Also continue discussion on the CFRP socket and shielding material around.

IHEP update:

- Jianchao explains a funding application was submitted last month for the production of the scintillators based on the GeCAM design.

Discussion on progress with CSU:

- Merlin mentions we don't have many answers to our questions, most urgent one is the size of POLAR-2.

- Xin suggests to ask once again for this specific question

- Jianchao offers to help if we don't get an answer soon

- Merlin will contact them again with this specific question and will let Jianchao know if we don't have an answer soon.

For next week Nicolas requests a sort of to do list from Merlin so people know better what to do. Merlin will take care of this.
