Description

Everybody is welcome to participate in this WIT Talk with Maria Girone,  CERN openlab CTO (Chief Technology Officer).

Maria Girone has a PhD in particle physics. She also has extensive knowledge in computing for high-energy physics experiments, having worked in scientific computing since 2002. Maria has worked for many years on the development and deployment of services and tools for the global distributed computing grid WLCG and the founder of the WLCG operations coordination team, which she also previously led. Throughout 2014 and 2015, Maria was the software and computing coordinator for the CMS experiment at the LHC.

In her role as CTO, Maria is managing the overall technical strategy of CERN openlab plans towards R&D in computing architectures, HPC and AI, in collaboration with the LHC experiments for the upgrade programs for software and computing, promoting opportunities for collaboration with industry.

Since July 2020, Maria coordinates for CERN the HPC Collaboration with SKA, GÈANT, and PRACE to tackle challenges related to the use of high-performance computing for large data-intensive science.

Since 2015, Maria leads the Diversity Working Group of the ACAT and CHEP conferences. She is also one of the four co-founders of Women in HPC (WHPC), Swiss Chapter, PASC.

In this WIT Talk, we would like to focus on ideas on how we can create a welcoming environment for women and minorities working in HEP (e.g. at any stage of their career) and how to attract more women to HEP, computing, and Big Data/AI world: what are the main issues and what we can do better and etc.
