Description
Traditionally, optical spectroscopy at radioactive ion beam facilities enables the measurement of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moment. However, the interaction of the atomic nucleus with the electron cloud in principle also contains higher-order terms. The next allowed terms are the magnetic octupole and electric hexadecapole terms. Both have been measured on a handful of stable isotopes, using high-precision rf-spectroscopy methods. In this seminar I will give an overview of the existing data, compared to simple shell-model calculations. These provides the context to interpret newly performed measurements at the laboratory in Jyvaskyla, on stable scandium and ytterbium. From these measurements, magnetic octupole moments could be extracted. An outlook towards future measurements on radioactive species will furthermore be presented.
