Description

I will describe the implementation of quantum computing with trapped ions, including the current state of the art and future directions towards scaling. Quantum computing uses quantum bits (qubits) to process information, which has been shown theoretically to offer power beyond that of any classical supercomputer. Trapped-ions are among the leading approaches to the goal of realizing a quantum computer, offering the highest quality of operation as well as some of the highest qubit numbers under control. I will present the key physical concepts underlying this approach, as well as ideas for overcoming current limitations on performance as well as qubit number.
