Description

An open discussion about the numerical model of the Sigaflex and characterization strategy was held.

During the discussion, the new findings on the HiRadMat-43, where some damage was observed in the Sigraflex after the irradiation at high intensity, was discussed and analysed. According to FLUKA studies, the energy density deposition in the experiment is similar to the expected energy deposition in the Dump core for RUN 3.  Some concerns about the performance of the dump core was shown, although the conditions of the experiment is substantially different from the dump core.

It was mentioned that the final aim of the material characterization is the development of a numerical model for the prediction/assessment of the behaviour of the dump core. The current dump should be operational during all RUN3 (2021-2025) and the core should withstand the new foreseen beam intensity/energy. The numerical model is vital understand the structural integrity and performance of the current core.

The extreme complexity of the Sigraflex behaviour was as well treated during the discussion. It was originally planned to extract the EOS of the Sigraflex. It is not clear if that strategy is feasible or suitable and it should be more deeply studied.

The dump core is made of several thousands of Sigraflex sheets. Simulations of individual sheets can leads to unfeasible numerical models due to the enormous computational cost. It was commented to try to construct a model representative somehow of the bulk behaviour of the core.

It is required to analysed in detail all the information that we have at the moment in order to propose a suitable characterization and numerical model strategy. It was commented that information about the fabrication procedure could be very useful on that purpose.
