Abstract:

After my 4 months stay in Cape Coast Nii Quaynor invited me to give 2 day workshops on the Internet of Things (IoT) at the yearly African Internet Summit. Since the course material collected for these workshops go far beyond the scope of a 2 day workshop, the idea came up to develop it further into a full semester course.

The micro computer systems used in IoT must be very cheap, because they often control just one or two sensors and their price must be in relation with the hardware they control. In addition, often many such devices are needed. On the other hand they must have Internet access and they must be powerful enough to run the Internet protocols.

Already at the end of my stay at UCC the local lecturers proposed to change the programming language from C to Python, for which there is more experience in the department, and I therefore designed the new course around this more modern language.

This lecture will present how to run a Python interpreter on a 5 US $ micro computer, how to read out sensors and how to control actuators in Python and how to made actuator control and sensor data available to the WEB.
