3rd meeting: Alternative materials

Europe/Zurich

Present: Alexej, Anité, Giulia, Ruth, Sergio, Stefano, Suitbert, Walter

Sergio presented design of the holder for the DC electrodes for irradiation in the H- source test stand. According to CERN main workshop, it can be fabricated by the end of July.

Giulia will discuss the holder design with the H-source team for eventual comments before we can start fabrication. She will also investigate the availability of the H-source test stand for the irradiation of Copper DC electrode in August.

Ruth presented the current status of the copper DC electrodes. They got some discoloration during storage after the heat treatment and have to undergo thermal cycle again. She presented the proposal for initial stage of conditioning: 10 million pulse at 100 us and that flat run for BDR measurements. She will start as soon as DC electrodes are back from the oven.

Stefano and Sergio presented comprehensive survey of the alternative material candidates (see slides). final list includes in addition to Cu: CuCrZr, Ta, Nb, Ti-alloy. Stefano kindly agreed to look into fabrication of the electrodes of the same shape as we have for copper.

Suitbert mentioned that Linac2 proton source is not used at the moment and potentially can by adapted for material irradiation. it has ~95 keV energy which is ~2 times higher than L4 H- source. Alexej will discuss with Richard this option.
