ABP-HSS Section meeting
News, round table discussion
----------------------------
Rogelio, slides
COVID news are regularly communicated by email and https://hse.cern/covid-19-information.
Congratulations for several papers published by HSS members or in the final round to get published.
Stefano, Daniele and Roderik mention also several recent and new papers related to collimation.
There is a new web page for BOINC https://sixtrack-boinc-status.web.cern.ch/sixtrack-boinc-status/
Helmut reports on experiments related activities : he presented a short LHCC summary in the LMC https://indico.cern.ch/event/955936/ last week, and organized a LBS meeting https://indico.cern.ch/event/866771/ on Monday last week https://indico.cern.ch/event/866771/ with a discussion of vacuum simulations for the analysis of pressure bump tests by ATLAS.
Stefano on collimation : there is good progress in LS2. Two primary collimators were installed last week, leaving only four collimators still to be installed. Recent collimation WG meetings were mostly oriented towards the LHC startup.
Stefano also commented on the LBOC meeting https://indico.cern.ch/event/951719/ yesterday, which discussed the planned LHC beam test in autumn 2021, with options depending on 11T magnet installation and availability of RF experts working also on RF-commissioning for slip-stacking for heavy ions runs in the injectors.
Laurent, Codes:
Discussions are ongoing on survey and alignment. Andrea Latina finalized the space charge implementation, documentation remains to be done. Coupling studies with Tobias for LHC are in progress, to be presented in the next meeting.
Tobias meets tomorrow with Steve Peggs / Fermilab, to discuss activities for the electron Ion collider.
Laurent mentions the CERN computing school next week and recommends to see the corresponding web page https://indico.cern.ch/event/853710/
Tobias, OMC:
OMC had a meeting last week with a presentation by Riccardo on new optics repository.
Luca and others work on applications for the the Booster.
Tobias presented OMC measurement ideas for the LHC test in yesterdays LBOC.

Leon, Quadrupole strength requirements at 7 TeV
Following the request by Matteo for the LHC hardware commissioning,
Leon and Helmut determined what maximum currents we could expect for RUN3,
based on the 2018 standard physics optics and high-beta and ballistic optics options studied for RUN3. The highest value seen in this options was 11115A, rounded up by Matteo to 11200 A as proposed maximum current for the main quadrupoles to be used in the LHC hardware commissioning.
Riccardo, LHC sequence for RUN3
The LHC sequence generation is based on information from the layout database https://layout.cern.ch
As can be seen from the slides, the generation of a valid MAD-X sequence from the layout database
requires many checks and fixes. One complication is that the layout database uses cartesian co-ordinates while MAD-X positions elements around beams, making it difficult to correctly represent dog-legs or elements common to both beams like the TAN and Y-chamber in the sequence.
Riccardo looks in detail at the changes compared to the current MAD-X sequence.
Modifications include the TAN with ZDCs, TCLD, TDI, BMP, Roman Pot and collimator elements.
He also checks changes on magnetic elements including the LHCb spectrometer and the new MBH 11 Tesla magnets,
Corrections are also needed for overlapping elements and some position changes to avoid negative drifts in MAD-X.
