What is this? : The African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was founded in 2003 with the mission to enable "Africa’s youth to shape the continent’s future through innovative scientific training, breakthrough research and public engagement".  It serves as a pan-African graduate institute serving to bring together students from throughout the continent to work through a year of intensive study driven by educators coming from around the world.  This course exposes students to a diverse set of subjects from throughout mathematical sciences including pure math and statistics, physics and computer science, as well as financial mathematics and prepares them to pursue research masters and PhD studies afterwards.

This forum is set up as an opportunity to introduce our colleagues from Swiss institutions (and possibly elsewhere!) to the AIMS academic community and describe how they can get involved as an educator.  And likewise, this is an opportunity to connect AIMS students and alumni to faculty from Swiss institutions (and possible elsewhere!) who share intellectual interests and may have research and funding opportunities to pursue together.

Why should you come? :

Because you are an AIMS student or alumni interested in studying for your research masters or PhD in the future and are interested in building your academic network. 

OR 

Because you are a scientist (graduate student, post-doc, faculty, staff) and have heard someone mention AIMS before and how much they loved teaching there.  "AIMS has the best students ever!" and "The environment is so energizing!" are things you may have heard.  So come learn how you can get involved.

What we intend to achieve? : Make connections!  We want to connect those who wish to get involved in the work of AIMS and teaching in Africa with those who are learning in Africa and are interested in learning and researching elsewhere.

Why Switzerland + AIMS? : Everyone is invited to attend, and the title of the event derives from the organizers of the event currently being stationed at institutes based in Switzerland.  Of course, everyone is willing to attend and profit from the discussions and connections we will foster.

A broad overview of the AIMS mission with the individual perspective of Dr Angela Tabiri from AIMS-Ghana, who graduated from AIMS in 2014, earned her PhD from University of Glasgow in 2019, and is currently a AIMS - Google AI Postdoctoral Fellow and lecturer at AIMS-Ghana.

Emilia Magnani and Göktug Alkan joined AIMS as tutors during/after their Master's studies at ETH Zurich. They will share their experience tutoring and help you understand how you can get involved.

14:40 → 15:00 Lecturing and Thesis Supervision @ AIMS

Prasenjit and Claire will give their perspectives on lecturing at AIMS and help you understand how you can be involved.

Claire David lectured at AIMS-Ghana in 2019 while she was a research fellow at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. Since then, has mentored multiple AIMS alumni in their graduate applications. She is now a professor of physics at York University in Toronto, Canada.

Prasenjit Saha has lectured at multiple AIMS centers and supervised thesis projects starting in 2015 and is currently a researcher at the University of Zurich is astrophysics.

15:10 → 15:40 Swiss Opportunities/Programs

From co-funding opportunities, to applying to a PhD in Switzerland, we give an overview of some of the ways to bring researchers in Africa and Switzerland together.

Raphaela Kübler is the Science and Technology Program Officer at the Embassy of Switzerland to South Africa and will speak about the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for Foreign Scholars.

Jasmina Saric is coordinating the Swiss Leading House Region Africa mandate for bilateral research collaboration between Swiss academic and research institutions and partner institutions in the sub-Saharan Africa region. She will speak about the opportunities for funding collaborative research and innovation activities that the Leading House has made available in the funding period 2017-2020 and what may be expected for the next period.

15:40 → 16:10 Networking

During this portion of the event, we will group academics from Switzerland (or elsewhere!) with students from AIMS based on their intellectual interests. These are indicated on the registration form so please do be sure to register for this event. The goal is to seed connections and begin building a stronger network between AIMS and math and science in Switzerland.
