Modulator decision for 3MeV test-stand

Europe/Zurich

Davide presented a list of 6 alternative spare modulator scenarios for Linac4 and the test-stand. A scenario where the current RFQ modulator would be replaced with one or two 3MeV modulators keeping another spare is the most likely for Linac4.

Suitbert clarified that the current meeting is to define a strategy for the test-stand alone, taking the Linac4 options into account without focusing on them.

The current Spare RFQ Project has a clear scope that is:
- Testing RFQ2 with RF in 2021 and with beam in 2022 for few months each
- Designing and building an RFQ3 (project framework to be updated accordingly)
- It does not foresee for operating a 3MeV beam-line for source or LEBT R&D.

For this reason reusing the existing 3MeV modulator with a minor upgrade in the electronics to make the interfaces compatible, would be sufficient. SY-EPC is able to make those changes in the electronics within few months and it would be ready to "lend" the modulator to the Spare RFQ Project for the required periods of few months.

SY-EPC will clarify the strategy for Linac4 with respect to the spares policy now, taking the request of the Spare RFQ Project into account. A likely scenario is to actually build and upgrade 2x 3MeV modulators for Linac4. The time frame will need to be discussed with the Linac4 project.

The Spare RFQ Project is ready to use also the upgraded version of the modulator (pulse length up to 1.1ms, higher voltage) and proposes to actually test the 2 modulators with an RFQ klystron load at the test stand. This way the modulators could be fully qualified before their installation in Linac4.

For any other extension of the Spare RFQ Project that would require the availability of a 3MeV modulator for a longer period, EPC would prefer the modulator to be of the same type and configuration as the Linac4 version. This would require an investment into a single modulator unit at about 175kCHF. The amount should be included in the MTP plan for the additional source test stand as its purpose is to make the 3MeV line permanent.

Any alternative scenario for a test-stand with a higher duty-cycle e.g. using the ESS modulator, would need to be decided at a later moment and will lead to related costs for upgrades and spare parts. Related costs have not been analysed yet.
