Abstract:

Five-dimensional SCFTs arise from M-theory compactified on local (toric) Calabi-Yau threefolds. These theories are intrinsically non-lagrangian, although they often exhibit a low-energy gauge theory phase, and their BPS states can be constructed as branes wrapping topologically nontrivial cycles in the Calabi-Yau geometry. In this talk I will show how to extract detailed information about the BPS sector of these theories by the introduction of an associated graph, called a quiver. The quiver defines a discrete integrable system, whose discrete time evolution allows on the one hand to study the BPS particle spectrum of the theory, on the other hand to derive difference equations satisfied by its partition function.
