Abstract:

Please note that the we kindly ask you when connecting to this seminar to mute your microphones and cameras in order to have a good connection.

Novel superconducting magnesium diboride (MgB2) lines, called Superconducting (SC) Links, are being developed at CERN in the framework of the LHC High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Project . The SC Link is a transmission line made by MgB2 cables connected at one termination to the High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) REBCO cables of the current leads and at the other termination to the Nb-Ti bus bars of the cryo-magnets. Electrical connections between superconducting materials of the SC-Link shall be reliable and have a reproducible low resistance. In this seminar, we present an overview of the splices of the cold powering system and in particular we focus on the study done to optimize the soldering process of the REBCO tapes in order to assure the achievement of these requirements. Although the data presented have been collected for the REBCO termination of the SC-Link, the study is relevant for any magnet application involving REBCO conductors and requiring the splicing of the terminations.
