HL-LHC BGI Requirements

Europe/Zurich

Present: Gunn, James, Lauren, William.

Discussion on main milestones for 2025:

  • Fix conceptual design for impedance studies (end of May);
  • Write ECR for HL integration (end of May);
  • Fix the SPS BGI-H instrument during TS1 (June);
  • HL-LHC Beam Size review (September).

Fixing the SPS BGI-H

Minimum intervention = Install base plate to improve Faraday cage.

To be decided in coming days if/how to modify the RF "window", options:

  • Don't change -> See if RF problem fixed by base plate;
  • Install RF window same as BGI-V;
  • Install RF window like BGI-V, but with additional holes to improve transmission.

William will discuss within ML how to organise the intervention during TS1.

Input for HL-LHC BGI Design

Ionisation electron detector based on a single Timepix4 HPD.

Need to maximise Faraday cage effectiveness by minimising volume of Faraday cage and minimising lengthe of transmission cables.

Pro's / Con's of "classic" desing with feedthroughs on rectangular desing vs. "new" design with a single DSub feedthrough beneath the detector.

Lauren / William to investigate design options.

Gunn will continue to optimise design of the cathode.

Aim to have a first concept by end of May, with a plausible mechanical & electrical desing and reasonable performance.
