Description

The New Small Wheels (NSWs) aim to replace the present innermost stations of the ATLAS endcap Muon spectrometer with new detector assemblies. The NSW is the most ambitious and challenging of the ATLAS Phase-1 Upgrades, since comprising a complete new detector system. Micro-mesh gaseous structure (so called Micromegas, MMs) chambers together with small strip Thin Gap Chambers, sTGC, will take the place of the present Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC), Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) and TGC chambers. The number of detection layers will go from 4 and 8 in the CSC and MDT region respectively, to 16. Both MM and sTGC will provide tracking and triggering functionality. The NSW will have to cope with 2 million readout channels, totalling almost to as many channels as there are in the rest of the Muon system of ATLAS all together.

The presentation will summarize the status of the NSW project, which has its side A wheel scheduled for installation next year in summer. The integration activities which take place here at CERN will be described in more detail, together with the commissioning plans. In addition, specific problems which were met in the last months will be described and the way in which they were overcome and resolved presented.
