Description

Abstract:

In December 2014 NASA launched its new Orion spacecraft on a test flight in preparation for future manned missions to the moon and MARS. Such long-term manned missions carry with them an obligation to monitor closely the radiation dose to which flight crew are exposed. The Orion payload included 2 battery-operated Timepix devices preparing the way for future on-board mixed-field dosimetry. The Timepix detector systems, developed within the Medipix Collaborations, are able to measure the deposited energy within a particle track with high spatial resolution and reasonable energy resolution. This allows for per particle track analysis and can provide time resolved information on flux, direction, composition and spectra of mixed radiation fields. Together with the low power consumption these device are well-suited for use as radiation monitors in space. Approximately 6 such devices have been recording the radiation environment continuously on the International Space Station since 2012. This seminar will give an overview of the Timepix based radiation monitors being used in current missions and those being developed for future space missions.
