IHEPCCC Meeting Minutes - Jan 10 2007
Attendees:
W von Ruden, P.Avery, B.Gibbard, D.Petravich, P.Watkins, R.Mount,
H.Newman, D.Foster, V.Guelzow, F.Ould-Saada, R.Tafirout, R.Sobie
1 Network
H.Newman (Chair, SCIC) gave an overview of the network situation around the world and in particular, the efforts to improve the network infrastructure in the developing world. See the slides and also the additional documents provided by Harvey.
D.Foster (Project Lead, LHCOPN) reviewed the state of LHC Network. The project is well advanced and in good shape for LHC beam later this year. It was pointed out that the network requirments of the LHC experiments is not identical (ATLAS T2 sites connect to one T1 whereas all in CMS all T2 sites can connect to any T1).
2 Non-HEP computing at ICFA laboratories
R.Mount showed how the situation at SLAC is evolving from a site focused on HEP to one that will be multi-disciplenary (with a large HEP component). He described that the needs of the astroparticle and photon researchers are quite different and very challenging. The goal at SLAC is to provide a single integrated computing facility rather than one addressing the separate communities.
V.Guelzow pointed out that similar challenges are arising at DESY.
H.Newman pointed out that ICFA itself is discussing its role (HEP versus multi-disciplenary). However the parent committee of ICFA (IUPAP C11) is focused on HEP. There are other IUPAP Commissions on nuclear physics, astrophysics (there are 20 IUPAP Commissions).
There is an IUPAP web page that describes the various Commissions.

3 IHEPCCC News
IHEPCCC will give a presentation to ICFA in Feb in Beijing. The chair will distribute a draft talk for review prior to the meeting. Issue for discussion include the changing nature of the ICFA labs and the challenge of power for computing.
IHEPCCC will need to review the membership in Feb as the terms of a number of people ends.
Two working groups have been established on processor benchmarks and filesystems. Interested groups are encouraged to contact Helge Meinhard (Helge.Meinhard@cern.ch) and Andrei Maslennikov (Andrei.Maslennikov@caspur.it).
Next meeting in March or April 2007.
