1. Status of WP8 and next actions

Lucio Rossi: coordinator of the IFAST WP8 shares a presentation (for details see the indico page https://indico.cern.ch/event/1072472/ )

Lucio reminds that we decided to have IFAST WP8 meetings every third Thursday of the month at 9:00. The next meeting is fixed for the 21st of October at 9:00 am. Today is a meeting out of regular slots to bridge between June (last IFAST-WP8 meeting and October, given that Sept 21 and 22 we have the CCT workshop). For info: HITRIplus WP8 regular meeting slot is the first Tuesday of the month at 16.00. Lucio reminds to the audience that the participation to the CCT workshop needs the registration (restricted access). If the attendees want to invite other person interested, they can do it but they have to communicate it (to Lucio, S. Sabatini and/or E. De Matteis).

Lucio reminds the aims of the WP8, and that we asked two modifications to the governing Board:

  1. Extension for deadline ESG, from October 2021 to April 2022;
  2. The change in scope from a curved CCT to a combined function CCT, for the first demonstator that was supposed to be in Nb-Ti low losses. (the second demo, in HTS, was already foreseen as straight).

The main comments on these modifications were:

  1. The ESG postpone of six months is not a big deal.
  2. The change in scope (from a curved CCT to a combined function is not without suspicion that we want to save money and effort…)

Lucio proposes, to wipe out suspicious and also for the scientific interest a selection of a special material for the first demo, like MgB2 that would be certainly a way to dissipate the doubt. Use of low loss Nb3Sn would be also a very attractive solution (but there is extra cost for the wires and especially for the mandrel material and for the heat treatment, so we do not consider so far). He proposes to take a decision before the 5th of October (Gov. Board).
Conductor is to be supplied by CERN (like HTS). INFN was committed to provide low loss Nb-Ti that has in house. Quantity of MgB2 may be important in the 20 km of wire or more, to get >3 T. Otherwise better to stay on Nb-Ti and close the business.
INFN has to deliver D2 deliverable: conceptual design of the curved combine function LTS first demonstrator, by February 2022.
Amalia Ballarino comments that we can explore both the solutions, and we have to implement a conceptual design study for both, MgB2 and Nb3Sn (action), in order to assess the shape and the length of conductor. Lucio agrees with Amalia and proposes as deadline of these studies the 21st of October (next IFAST WP8 meeting).

2. Rapid tour of each Members to get novelties

T. Lecrevisse: shares few confidential slides on one of the last research done at CEA, concerning a small fast ramped magnet (HTS) with Metal Insulation technology. The magnet is a solenoid of REBCO, that showed high stability at 50% of quench current ramping at 1 T/s. The test was done in liquid helium. Lucio suggest to explore various dB/dt including 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 that is of the interest for the gantry. T. Lecrevisse says that analysis is under way. For more details, contact directly T. Lecrevisse.

3. Presentation of program of task 8.6

Lucio reminds the audience that task 8.6 does not concern hadron-therapy magnets: it was originally proposed by GSI as an independent WP, but it was then incorporated into WP8 as task 8.6, given the topics about SC cables, avoiding too many WPs in IFAST. Anyway, we agreed (IFAST coordination, INFN and GSI) that task 8.6 is run independently under responsibility of GSI, in parallel with the rest of WP8 (task 8-1 to 8.5). However, it is of course useful to exchange information and ideas to stimulate possible synergy. Dr. Kei Sugita, head of the Magnet Group in GSI, then deliver an interesting talk showing the plan for a SC Cable that can be used for design of a fast (1/Ts or more) cycling magnet that could become the backbone of a SIS400 facility, increasing the beam rigidity by four times wrt to the present SIS100 under construction. (see slides on the “HTS Cable design for a new dipole magnet at GSI”; For more details, contact K. Sugita).

Actions:

  • Conceptual design study of CCT magnets based on MgB2 or Nb3Sn (deadline 21st of October);
  • Milestone M2: Charac. of the first length of superconductor for low losses (10/2021).
