An experimentalist’s view of PDF fitting: from correlated systematic uncertainties to enhanced χ2 tolerance

by Amanda Sarkar (University of Oxford (GB))

Europe/Zurich
Description

What are parton distribution functions (PDFs) and why are they important? How do we determine them and where
does the information come from? In particular, how are correlated systematic uncertainties accounted for both
within and between data sets? Marginal data set inconsistencies have led to the introduction of enhanced
χ2 tolerance and there is also a need to take into account model and parametrisation uncertainties.
Different choices lead to some differences in the global PDFs of CT, MSHT, NNPDF. This is addressed by the
PDF4LHC15/21 PDF combinations, which will be briefly reviewed.
