Impact of material properties of Nb3Sn coil on its thermo-mechanical behavior

Abstract: Impregnated Nb3Sn conductor is known to be a brittle composite material with a complex nonlinear mechanical behavior. Yet, many finite element models of magnets are made with a consequent hypothesis: the superconductor is homogenized as a single block, with isotropic and elastic material definitions. This work aims to better reproduce the thermomechanical behavior of the Nb3Sn superconductor in a finite element model of magnets.
A twofold study took place, with, at first, the study of an instrumented self-standing MQXFS coil cooled down to 77 K. The self-standing coil FE model and the experimental data have been compared, and a parametric study on the various coil properties and model aspects has led to an understanding of the discrepancy between FE prediction and the experimental results.
The second step of this work is to study the impact of the anisotropy of the coil block in the 3D finite element model of an Nb3Sn quadrupole on the mechanical stresses in the magnet.
The implementation of the orthotropic properties in ANSYS APDL will be presented along with the methodology used for the parametric study. The goal is to provide a better understanding of the sensitivity of the finite element model of a Bladder and Keys Nb3Sn quadrupole magnet to the coil material properties. The status of this study will be presented as well as the next steps foreseen on the topic.
