Dr Insa Schroeder heads the Stem Cell Differentiation and Cytogenetics Group of the Biophysics Department at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt. She received her PhD in food chemistry and toxicology, but quickly devoted herself to stem cell research at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda MD, USA, and in the In vitro Differentiation Group at the Leibniz-Institute (IPK) Gatersleben. As a head of the Junior Research Group “Stem Cell Research” at the Translational Center for Regenerative Medicine, Leipzig and the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg she broadened her expertise in the differentiation of human adult and embryonic stem cells, tissue regeneration and the generation of disease/patient-specific induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. At GSI, her lab's ongoing bench research includes investigations of radiation effects on the differentiation, maintenance and regeneration of cardiac and neuronal tissues using human pluripotent stem cell based normal tissue and tumor organoids. Dr. Schroeder’s work is part of numerous ongoing collaborations with the MD Anderson Cancer Center; the Heidelberger Ionenstrahl-Therapiezentrum (HIT); University of Applied Sciences Aschaffenburg; Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia; Technical University of Ilmenau; German Aerospace Center, Institute of Aerospace Medicine; Federal Office for Radiation Protection, Neuherberg and the Technical University of Darmstadt.
