In 1922, the Institute of Physics of the University of Göttingen was divided into two institutes, the Institute for Theoretical Physics under Max Born and the II. Institute of Physics with James Franck as its founding director. James Franck received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925. Hans Dehmelt wrote his diploma thesis at our institute, Wolfgang Paul habilitated here in 1944 before being called to the University of Bonn in 1952. Both were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1989.
After the war, research at the II. Institute of Physics centered around nuclear physics and nuclear solid state physics. In 2005/2006, the institute underwent a reorientation towards high-energy collider particle physics. As a result, it is now additionally active in ATLAS, Belle(-II), in grid computing with a Tier-2 site in the WLCG, and in detector development. Furthermore, we are involved in outreach and community service in the form of organising meetings such as ATLAS-D or the DPG and the "Hadron Collider Physics Summer School - HASCO".
On Friday, July 1, 2022, we would like to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our institute together with you in Göttingen, from 15:30 onwards. For this purpose, we would like to invite you to participate in the festivities either in presence or virtually via videoconferencing. For this purpose, we have created two registration forms, which can be found below.
Im Jahr 1922 wurde das Physikalische Institut der Universität Göttingen in zwei Institute, das Institut für Theoretische Physik unter Max Born und das II. Physikalische Institut mit dem Gründungsdirektor James Franck, aufgeteilt. James Franck erhielt 1925 den Nobelpreis für Physik. Hans Dehmelt hat an unserem Institut seine Diplomarbeit geschrieben, Wolfgang Paul habilitierte 1944 hier bevor er 1952 einem Ruf an die Uni Bonn folgte. Beide wurden 1989 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet.
Nach dem Krieg wurde am II. Physikalischen Institut Forschung zur Kernphysik und nuklearen Festkörperphysik betrieben. Im Jahr 2005/2006 hat das Institut eine Neuausrichtung in Richtung Hochenergie-Kollider-Teilchenphysik erfahren. Inzwischen ist es dadurch zusätzlich in ATLAS, Belle(-II), im Grid-Computing mit einem Tier-2 Standort im WLCG und in der Detektorentwicklung aktiv. Desweiteren beteiligen wir uns im Bereich der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und mit Community Service in Form von Tagungen wie ATLAS-D oder der DPG und der "Hadron Collider Physics Summer School - HASCO".
Am Freitag, den 1. Juli 2022, möchten wir gerne ab 15:30 mit Ihnen und Euch zusammen in Göttingen in Präsenz das 100-jährige Jubiläum unseres Institutes feiern. Dafür möchten wir Sie und Euch dazu einladen, entweder in Präsenz oder virtuell per Videokonferenz an den Feierlichkeiten teilzunehmen. Zu diesem Zweck haben wir zwei Registrierungsformulare erstellt, die hierunter zu finden sind.
