Meeting: 18 MeV e-line for run2c – Kickoff

Date: 02/08/2022

Participants: Vittorio Bencini (VB), Steffen Doebert (SD), Edda Gschwendtner (EG), Patric Muggli (PM), Ans Pardons (AP)

Discussion

The meeting started with a presentation by VB describing the proposed design for the 18 MeV line for Run2c (see slides).

PM pointed out that it would be good to shield the earth B field to prevent beam deflection and dispersion in the last section of the line. It was agreed that it would greatly simplify the operations.

SD suggested to add quadrupoles after the dogleg have more degrees of freedom to adjust the optics at the plasma merge.

SD also mentioned that the distance between the source and first dipole is not a fixed parameter and could be adjusted in case of need. VB commented that It could help in reducing the strength of the first three quadrupoles and the possible consequent non linearities.

The second presentation was given by SD, who presented the parameters of the electron injector.

The presentation triggered a discussion about the importance of the energy stability and the influence it has on the present (and therefore future) electron line. How much does it contribute to the beam jitter in the line?

With the new modulator energy jitter should be ~0.2% (now 1%)

The last presentation was given by Patric, who discussed the main beam requirements of the line.

The list of parameters triggered a discussion about the performance of the present electron line. The outcome is that position and angular jitter are the most critical aspects on the present design and should be addressed in the new line. To do this, it is important to quantify the jitter and identify its causes (energy or position jitter form the source, ripples in the power converters, …).

The new line should include instrumentation to measure current at every shot, bunch length, and possibly to estimate the beam position and angle at the plasma entrance.

Conclusions

It was agreed that measurements of energy jitter and a quantitative analysis of position jitter should be performed in the first weeks of August by VB and SD.

VB should perform simulations on the present line to quantify the effect of power converters ripple on the position jitter.

The results on jitter measurements, simulations, and analysis will be used as input for the next meeting.
