Description

Radioactive waste is produced by the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of CERN’s experimental facilities. Depending on its physical and radiological characteristics, waste can be classified into different families and undergo specific processing in view of its final disposal. In this presentation, after an overview of the radioactive waste management at CERN, we will focus on the B-FREE Project. This project aimed at clearing from regulatory control the technological waste issued from the CERN radiation areas. We will discuss the outcome of the project and the main lessons learned, which may be relevant to similar projects carried out within the HSE Unit.
