Minutes of the MADMAX CERN Meeting
Present: A. Dudarev, A. Rummler, A. Amamou, B. Rae, B. Majorovits, C. Krieger, D. Kreikemeyer, D. Kittlinger, D. Strom, D. Jaillet, J. Bernhard, J. Devine, J. Schaffran, M. Van dijk, M. Mentink, P. Pralavorio, T. Koettig, X. Genillon
1.) Introduction (J.Bernhard)
- Alexander Gerbershagen left. New contact for 2023 campaign: Johannes Bernhard. For >=2024: Maarten Van Dijk
- Planning discussion, possible window for magnet cooling + experiment could be 28.02.23 - 17.04.23 (preliminary and subject to change). Dates confined through cooling water availability in BA81 for the start and the beam commissioning in H8 for the end.
- Contact for planning questions: Bastien.Rae@cern.ch, contact for installation questions: Michael.Lazzaroni@cern.ch.
2. MADMAX News (B. Majorovits)
- Major milestones reached these last 12 months :
- Magnet quench protection and conductor demonstrated to be feasible. Prototype magnet foreseen after 2026 at DESY
- Booster mechanically feasible : i) piezo motor commissioned under strong B field and at 4K, ii) prototype with one disk (P200) run successfully in cryolab cryostat and at Morpurgo (inc. interferrometer).
- Booster calibration full chain established with CB100
- RFI compatibility established in Morpurgo (April 2022) --> can conduct long runs in Morpurgo
- Prototype cryostat available mid 2023 in Hamburg
- Morpurgo magnet is suitable to perform long time run for MADMAX prototypes
3. Morpurgo Magnet (A. Dudarev)
- Apr. 2022 run : supply pressure to the magnet 200 mbar +/- 100. Not healthy and require to increase the speed of the pump close to the limit (55 cycle / minute)
- Jun 2022: fix implemented on the cryo installation
- Sep./Oct. 2022 : cool down the magnet and perform 3 tests to check that the fix solves the problem (and it did !)
- Xavier Genillon will provide a documentation to the users of the magnet
- Not possible to run at 1.9 T (unless we have a very strong argument like an axion candidate to check)
- Morpurgo magnet is ready for long / stable runs in 2023 with control given to the users
4. MADMAX 2023 CB Test Plans (D. Strom / B. Majorovits)
- 2022 Morpurgo run allows to achieved the foreseen goals :
- No unwanted signals found mixing into the heterodyne system
- The low nooise amplifier works at 1.6 T
- No impact of Morpurgo on the DAQ
- 2023 plans:
- Setup/takedown at CERN : 5 days
- Measurement with CB100 in B-field : 4 days (min) to 4 weeks (max) (TBD)
- May be some time with CB200 (TBC) ?
- Requires magnet stable at 1.6 T and operated by users
- Physics goals (2023-24):
- Surpass CAST limit with CB100 (>=100 hours at 1.6 T) in 2023
- Improve further the limit with CB200 and G10 cryostat in 2024
5.a G10 Cryostat (D. Kreikemeyer)
- Cheap solution to make cold test in 23 and 24 at Morpurgo (while waiting for the proto-cryo to arrive)
- Commissioning of G10 cryo + CB100 ~ 1 week in 2023
5.b G10 Cryostat (T. Koettig)
- Successful first attempts in the cryolab in summer 2022 to test Transfer Line option
- Can Install and run the setup for the commissioning run in 2023
- Possible to connect to the gazometer in the Morpurgo area
- Cryocooler option can be envisaged in 2024.
6. MADMAX 2024/2025 Tests: Status of the Cryostat (C. Krieger)
- Call for tender successfully concluded in Dec. 2021- : will be build by Bilfinger Noell GmbH
- Received Final Design Report in August 2022 -->Start discussion with CERN safety before the end of the year
- Receiver cryostat build at MPP
- Rail system already at CERN, blessed by safety. Discussion ongoing for a dry run end of 2023
- On schedule to start operation at Morpurgo in Dec.2024
7. AoB
- Letizia (CERN safety) in maternity leave. Johannes / James D. will report to the safety section
- Technical and planning meetings in the mean time with smaller circle of involved persons.
- Next meeting: Proposal for week of December 5th (doodle will be send)
