On 30 January we are celebrating the Data Protection Day 2023!

As the 28th January 2023 - the Data Protection Day - falls on a Saturday, we have decided to celebrate this important day on the following Monday.

Again the four EIROforum organisations - CERN, EMBL, ESA and ESO - join to bring you a shared webinar on data protection.

The this year's topic is "Artificial Intelligence and Personal Data", and we are proud that we have found engaging speakers who share with us their view on the topic, be it from the technology perspective or the ethical stand point.

Le 30 janvier, nous célébrons la journée de la protection des données 2023 !

Comme le 28 janvier 2023 - la journée de la protection des données - tombe un samedi, nous avons décidé de célébrer cette journée importante le lundi suivant.

Une fois encore, les quatre organisations de l’EIROforum - CERN, EMBL, ESA et ESO - s’associent pour un événement commun sur la protection des données.

Le thème de cette année est "Intelligence artificielle et données personnelles", et nous sommes fiers d'avoir trouvé des intervenants motivés qui partagent avec nous leurs perspectives sur le sujet, que ce soit du point de vue de la technologie ou de l'éthique.

      Making digital privacy exist (again)

      Leading a modern life means leading a digital life… which is impossible without accepting that our privacy is eroded (at best) or non-existent (at worst). But must it be this way? Was it always like that? Here, we’ll consider the historical, human and technological factors defining our modern privacy expectations and capabilities. Through these lenses, we’ll search for the building blocks needed to deliver transparent and privacy-friendly digital experiences.

      Lecturer's Bio:
      Andrzej Nowak spent the last 16 years at the juncture of technology, business and innovation. His early experience was rooted in computer security, and shifted to more general domains while working for CERN and at Intel. Between 2007 and 2014 Andrzej worked at CERN openlab - a collaboration of CERN and industrial partners such as Google, HP, Huawei, Intel, Oracle and Siemens – and managed one of openlab’s innovation labs. Andrzej was also part of the openlab CTO office, where he helped set up next-generation technology projects for CERN. After his CERN stay, Andrzej founded a small technology and innovation consultancy as well as a fintech start-up. In the last few years, he worked in management consulting in finance and in innovation management. Andrzej’s current topics of interest include the future of identity, privacy, and money.

      A presentation on responsible AI in practice

      Gemma's presentation will deal with responsible AI in practice. She will discuss audits, leaflets and other tools researchers need to bear in mind to ensure transparency and trust in their systems. Furthermore, the presentation will be on compliance in data projects.

      Implementing privacy in AI projects

      ESA will share with us their Privacy by Design approach to implement privacy in AI projects.

      Lecturers' Bios:

      Gabriele De Canio is Transformation Officer at the European Space Operations Centre, European Space Agency. In his role, he is responsible for developing and deploying innovative solutions based on emerging technologies, such as AI and quantum computing, to space mission operations. Before joining ESA, he co-founded a machine learning start-up focussed on contributing towards a circular economy using satellite imagery and worked in the R&D team at McLaren Racing Formula 1. He holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Cambridge

      Leena van der Made is the Data Protection Officer at the European Space Agency, she previously worked in the data protection and IT in the banking industry in Finland and Germany and holds qualifications in Project Management (MBA); BSc in Information Management; Business Analysis; Systems Engineering; and Data Protection Certification from European and American universities.
