Polarization management in Silicon Photonics 50m Zoom conference room (Virtual Event)

      Virtual Event

Silicon Photonics technology has been identified as an excellent candidate for the development of the next generation of optical links for high energy physics applications. The high index contrast of the material allows the development of ultra-compact devices that can also be low-power and tightly co-integrated with electronics. However, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides exhibit strong birefringence which makes the SiPh devices highly polarization-sensitive. To overcome this drawback a polarization managment scheme is necessary. Different approaches have been proposed to achieve off-chip or on-chip polarization diversity. The most common techniques involve the use of polarization maintaining fibers (off-chip), or the use of 2D grating couplers or polarization splitters-rotators (on-chip). In this seminar we will describe the most relevant to our application polarization diversity techniques. We will focus on the polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) that we designed at CERN and have already included in the last chip submission, as part of PICv3.
