Visiting Purdue University (Travel, accommodation, internet)

Travel

Purdue University is easily accessible from Indianapolis International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and Chicago Midway Airport. Shuttles from these airports to the Purdue campus are between $25 and $60 one-way. Please consult this webpage for help on how to get to Purdue: How to get to Purdue

Couple of pointers to be made here:

  • Most ideally for international arrivals is to come via Chicago connect to Traverse City for TOP23 and once that workshop concludes around 1pm eastern on Sept 29th to fly back to Chicago and enjoy the "Windy City" for the weekend, then board a bus Sunday morning to arrive at Purdue.
  • We do not suggest to travel directly from TOP23 to Purdue on Sept 29th since it is homecoming and hotels, campus, town will be full!
  • We are considering renting out a bus that goes for from Traverse City (location of TOP23 workshop in the prior week) down to Purdue University - please contact us if that is interesting/useful for you.
  • By car it’s about a 2.5h (ORD / Midway) or 1h (IND) drive to Purdue U. Driving from Traverse City (TOP23 venue) is around 6h and many of us at Purdue might go by rental cars.
  • In town transportation includes free public transport back and forth from campus, as well as Uber, and Lyft services.
  • Airport — we currently have three preferred airport shuttle providers: EAC, Lafayette Limo, and Reindeer. We will negotiate to get the best rates for our participants.
  • Train — Lafayette has an AMTRAK Station that provides service to Chicago, it is not a high-speed connection.

If you arrive by Bus or Train from Chicago or elsewhere you can walk to either the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hampton Inn & Suites, see map below.

Accommodation

Most importantly: Purdue nor the TPF23 organizers work with travellerpoint(dot)org, please disregard their emails and do not click on any links contained in those emails - its a scam.

Multiple Hotel options in reasonable distance and with downtown urban flair exist in the local area. We have negotiated cost-effective rates at the Hilton Garden Inn, West Lafayette (walkable to venue) and at the Drury Inn, Lafayette (needs car/shuttle).

  • Within walking distance (15-20min) is the Hilton Garden Inn at $129, West Lafayette side, no breakfast. We negotiated rooms with the booking code: TOPQ or link provided further below, or by calling the Hotel directly 765-743-2100. The reservation cutoff date is midnight, Friday, September 10th - direct booking link is this one: Direct booking with the Hilton Garden Inn.
  • Most cost-effective accommodation is the Drury Inn - the negotiated rate is $109 and includes breakfast already. It is located on the Lafayette side and requires a 15-20min drive into Purdue University - a shuttle option may exist.
  • Other option more close to Purdue University include the following
    • Holiday Inn at $159, Lafayette side, no breakfast
    • Purdue Memorial Union Hotel at $189, on-campus, no breakfast but 5min walk to workshop venue.

Internet

Network access at Purdue University for personal laptops:

  • Easiest is eduroam, which is available everywhere.
  • Guest access to the Purdue network is possible but usually less performant when compared to eduroam.
  • ATT provides access too but its commercial.
