Gianfranco Bertone
Gianfranco is a Professor of Theoretical Astroparticle Physics at the Center of Excellence in Gravitation and Astroparticle Physics of the University of Amsterdam. After an MSc at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome and a PhD at the University of Oxford and the Institute of Astrophysics in Paris, he has held teaching and research positions at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the University of Padova, the Institut d’Astrophysique in Paris and the University of Zurich, before moving permanently to Amsterdam in 2011.
In 2011, together with a group of talented young faculty, he contributed to establish in Amsterdam the GRAPPA center of excellence in Gravitation and Astroparticle Physics, for which he acted as Spokesperson until 2019.
Since July 2019 Gianfranco is the Founding Director of the European Consortium for Astroparticle Theory, which aims to bring together the European community of theoretical astroparticle physicists and cosmologists.
He strongly believes in the importance of science outreach. He has written two popular science books, and gave number of public lectures. He has launched in 2018 a new initiative for the communication of science, Premio Cosmos, for which he acts as president.

Gianfranco est professeur de physique théorique des astroparticules au Centre d'Excellence en Physique de la Gravitation et des Astroparticules de l'Université d'Amsterdam. Après une maîtrise à l'Université "La Sapienza" de Rome et un doctorat à l'Université d'Oxford et à l'Institut d'astrophysique de Paris, il a occupé des postes d'enseignement et de recherche au Laboratoire national de l'accélérateur Fermi, à l'Université de Padoue, à l'Institut d 'Astrophysique de Paris et à l'Université de Zurich, avant de s'installer définitivement à Amsterdam en 2011.
En 2011, avec un groupe de jeunes professeurs talentueux, il acontribué à établir à Amsterdam le Centre d'Excellence GRAPPA en Physique de la Gravitation et des Astroparticules, pour lequel il a agi en tant que porte-parole jusqu'en 2019.
Depuis juillet 2019, il est le Directeur fondateur du Consortium européen pour la théorie des astroparticules, qui vise à rassembler la communauté européenne des physiciens et cosmologistes théoriciens des astroparticules.
Il croit fermement à l'importance de la vulgarisation scientifique. Il a écrit deux livres de vulgarisation scientifique et donné un certain nombre de conférences publiques. Il a lancé en 2018 une nouvelle initiative pour la communication de la science, Premio Cosmos, dont il est président.
