QTML 19-24 November
GESDA October
- EP: DG is discussing the opportunity of launching the Open Quantum Institute to become part of CERN, perhaps this could be a moment of co-hosting. Leveraging 2 things: level of contacts involved and opportunity of a handshake (all is still tbd, will be defined along the way)
- AdM: as part of the announcement of OQI, Sparks! could be a moment for stakeholders to come together and think of issues to fix and solutions (integrate Sparks! to OQI as CERN’s offering) . This could bring in more than we bargained for re: visibility
- AG: as long as it is clear that it is a one-off, this could work in our favour, a good synergy to gain visibility and level of names for Sparks!
- MP: during GESDA, allow for a CERN technical talk in which we advertise the Sparks! Launch
- AdM: indeed during GESDA there will only be an announcement of OQI (if it goes forward), and we can then announce that Sparks! could be a follow-up (or other) of OQI
- EP: depending on what has been decided by October, we will announce OQI and Sparks! During an intervention at GESAD
QTML
- AdM notes that QTML is only a sub-group of the full quantum community, it wouldnt necessarily make sense to link them both
Launch
- EP: there’s a range between philosophy, art, theory etc, who is the audience for this? Who are we trying to engage?
- CM: each product has a target audience. Launch & talks are public facing. Forum is aimed at more technical AND other sources, to bring them together where they might not have met before
- AG: main audience is whoever is willing and able to understand science and technology. Interested in subject
- CM: launch is also a great moment to showcase better what the subject means for CERN
- AdM: goal of the first day is to be inspirational ok, but how do we measure the success of the Forum?
- JG: not easy, but by 2nd edition we saw people meeting and coming together and wanting to take things forward continuing
- AdM: can we make the Forum goal to come up with concrete solutions for the OQI, to work directly towards. Could make for a concrete outcome. Even if OQI doesn’t happen
- Outreach and engagement arm of what CERN is doing in Quantum, beyond the design phase, conquer the divide
Theme and Topics:
- AdM: first impression, these topics are too tech-y
- EP: interdisciplinary lens: We need to scan what’s happening out there, to make sure we pick out a niche and find a relevant point of view. Considering we’re not spending millions like others, we need to be as relevant and stand-out as possible. Otherwise we run the risk of not adding a lot to global conversations.
- AdM: for example cryptography is being talked about everywhere
- The real value will be convening. Because we are not experts in the interdisciplinary. Each has their expertise. Disrupting the way we think, the way we learn, asking questions that those from other disciplines might answer better - important to go beyond the technical sphere
- CERN has 2 things: centre de compétences, and platform to broker conversation, (and many member states)
- If we remain technical, then spotlight applications eg Cleveland Clinic, just bought a Quantum computer, biomolecular research. So more than the actual machine and how it works, what it is that we’ll be able to reach in biomedicine etc same for us in physics, what happens if we go beyond the gravitational waves etc. more about the game than about the tools
- Following the CERN principle of having experts to prevent the issues that will arise with technology, topics could be:
- How is technology affecting larger social aspects, how the game will change?
- How will it actually affect humanity and lives,
- How do we leave no one behind, (will we create a new divide? )
- How do we transfer the new knowledge developed to the education system,
- how do we keep the knowledge in an open domain,
- how will it change the way we think.
- The launch event could be: Quantum for CERN, followed by How will Quantum disrupt different areas in society or How the game will change and then add a journalist or a philosopher to the discussion?
Action points:
EP will share more about QI and OQI
We reformulate topics
