new user schedule online version 1.6 (counted that this is the 21st numbered user schedule since February)

See this codimd location from Tuesday morning onwards for the News from the FOM (D. Lazic for B. Holzer)

Interesting incident on Friday 7.07 - Technical Infrastructure closed wrong water circuit, stopped SPS for 5 minutes

ISOLDE

Running fine: GPS 99.8 % HRS 98.9 % HIE 95.5%
Few minor issues followed up

AD/ELENA

First week of physics production, still missing ~10% of injected intensity in AD, 85% deceleration efficiency in both machines.
Up to 10% intensity fluctuations in the transfer lines, maybe correlated to AD-ELENA transfer stability problem.
Recurrent issue trips of the DR.QUAD, so far without solution

Preview of Booster inspections:

cancelled: Thursday 14 July from 7h30 to 8h30: access for QFO11 leak inspection. No beam to users.

Preview of MDs:

Week 28:

  • Wednesday 12.07 08:00-14:00 Dedicated MD for SPS collimation studies, no beam to NA.
  • Wednesday 12.07 14:00-18:00: bunched beam slow extraction with extraction to P42, with high intensity LHC beam in parallel and hysteresis studies parasitically. No access for NA62 during that period
  • Long parallel MD (brightness curve measurements) originally scheduled for week 30 advanced to Thursday 13.07 in order to understand the limitations of the newly installed wire scanner.
  • Short parallel MD slot moveed from Thursday to Friday afternoon

Week 29:

  • Only short parallel MDs planned so far

Weeks 30, 31 and 32:

  • Dedicated MDs with extraction to primary targets and P42.

Intensity split

continue with SPS T2/T4/T6 = 30/72/45

PS Machine Report (Please Add Your Name Here)

SPS Machine Report (Verena)

Very good availability recently, albeit a bit worse than last week. Availability for the last 7 days (taken Wednesday evening):

Several issues when coming back from the MD Wednesday evening.

Another test during MD of EBC, close to final set up for operation.
LHC frequent filling due to various spurious interlocks and other issues. Luckily filling very good these days.

Safety / Radiation Protection (Alex Schouten)

  • Please make sure that a helmet is worn in the experimental halls
  • Please request the ISIEC inspections at least a week before the inspection has to take place to allow for scheduling

n_TOF (Nikolas Patronis)

  • EAR1: 30Si(n,g) measurement is on going till next week
  • EAR2: 243Am(n,f) measurement successfully realized. The second part of the same measurement will start next week in EAR1. Collimator changed yesterday (diameter 6.7 cm → 3cm). Next two campaigns in EAR2 will be on neutron capture reactions (30Si & 64Ni). Capture setup preparations will me realized today (est. 10h00 - 16h00; i.e no beam request for us for this time window)
  • NEAR: Irradiation hardness studies are on-going in i-NEAR.
  • PoT: 1.02E19 (Better than expected. MANY thanks to PS teams!)

East Area Beam Status (D. Banerjee)

T9: Change to low momentum configuration done. Beam to be checked today with the users after safety clearance.
T10: Good operation.
T11: No user, beam off.

East Area Users Tour de Table

T8: IRRAD / CHARM (F. Ravotti & S. Fiore)

Good week, no issue with operation but cumulative intensity delivered to T8 relatively low (~1.6E16 p/w, see plot below) probably due to reduced duty cycle (in average we got daily ~1 spill/13 BP [~0.065] rather than 1/10 BP, see plot below). Beam alignment on both X- and Y-axis OK (again >90% for X-axis). During the access on Wednesday, we exchanged dosimetry samples and all long-term users continue EP-ESE, TE-MSC [including N2 experiment], CMS Pixel [scanning table], RD50, etc. ATLAS ITk strips has been removed and CMS LGADs experiment started (IRRAD). CMS upgrade readout tower and BE-CEM continue testing, SY-EPC completed their test (CHARM). Upcoming access, next week. Complex installations in IRRAD, access expected to be long.

T9 Outgoing: IDEA DRC (Seungkyu Ha)

We successfully perfomed test beam experiment yesterday. During test beam, we did lots of programs. We measured energy resolution. And linearity test of detector is also performed. Our detector has linearity within 1% uncertainties. And we did timeing resoultion study (~400ps) and also we studied response of the projective tower at the border between towers. And then we tried to test all 64 individual channels of MCP PMT for high granularity calorimeter. We really appriciate the people who help us.And very thanks to nice quailty and stable beam.

T9: WCTE (Akira Konaka)

Installation completed on Wednesday and safety inspection took place at 9am (and completed at 2pm)
Initially take the beam at 500-1000MeV/c where the beam intensity is high. The first few days will be on tuning the beam and detector. If there is an opportunity for more beam, we would switch to 200-500MeV/c setting which is limited by statistics.
Manget is being shipped from Fermilab (it was shipped on Feb.13 local time) and expected next week. The installation of the magnet will be on July 26 for the tagged photon beam. As a result, we will not switch to the high momentum setting during this 2023 data taking.

T10 Main: ALICE ITS3 (Paolo Martinengo)

smooth data taking (when beam available)
changing telescope right now, safety inspection planned this afternoon at 14:00
Air conditioning working fine, last time I missed the new system, apologies

T10 Parallel: ALICE TIMING (Manuel Colocci)

Took data successfully last days, still few sensors to be measured

T10 Incoming: BL4S - Week 29 (Sarah Zoechling)

This year, two winning teams of high school students will visit CERN in September (Weeks 37 & 38) to perform their experiments

  • with a Halbach array style magnet that would allow different dipole and quadrupole configurations (Team “Myriad Magnets” from the USA) and
  • a series of measurements to characterise the beam composition of the T10 beamline (Team “Particular Perspective” from Pakistan)

We aim at a combined setup for both experiments and will use the testbeam in week 29 to

  • Test / debug, calibrate, and align all components of our magnet (with the exception of the Halbach magnet itself for which we are in contact with the mechanical engineering department at CERN)
  • Verify some earlier beam composition measurements done by Maarten van Dijk et al via XCET pressure scans (Q2 2023) at selected energies for the positive beam
  • Extend the data with results from our ToF and Calorimeter measurements (where applicable)
  • Then perform a scan over negative beams at several different beam energies.

We would like to thank all persons and groups at CERN who help and support BL4S!

Announcement: If you would like to meet the students in September (weeks 37 & 38) when they perform their experiments (e.g. just to say ‘hello’ or to support them during the data analysis), please let us know. The students and us, we would be super grateful and happy to meet you!

HiRadMat (Please Add Your Name Here)

North Area Beam Status

H2, H4, H6, and H8 Beams (D. Banerjee)

H2: Smooth operation (wobbling change planned next wednesday)
H4: Smooth operation
H6: Higher rate of 6 x 10^6 particles per spill achieved in PPE156 vs. last higher intensity period (Week 23, 4 x 10^6) whilst remaining within RP limits. No issues to report.
H8: Smooth operation. Electron content improved after optics adjustment. No issues to report.

Other Beams P42, K12, and M2 (D. Banerjee)

M2: First beam checks done for the muon beam for NA64mu. Upstream profile monitors dont show a profile. This is being followed up with BI.
P42/K12: Checks for NA62 beam dump run done and data now being analysed by RP. About 60 units on T10 seem to be feasible with the 40 mm T4 target in. This was tested with 125 units on T4. This is not reflective of the final beam dump run request as the sharing will be different. Several trips of MNP33 during the MD, regulation card was changed in time for the physics data taking.

North Area Users Tour de Table

P42-K12 and M2

K12: NA62 (Chris Parkinson)

Stable data-taking since last week. Small (2-3mm) vertical shift in K12 was checked by Johannes on Sunday: no problem. We often have P0 survey warnings on different K12 and P42 magnets that appear and disappear very quickly. Looking forward to EBC being in operation.

M2 Main: NA64mu (L. Molina)

This week we continued installation

H2

H2: NA61/SHINE (Piotr Podlaski)

  • we collected some special/calibration data:
    • magnetic field off data for alignment purposes
    • max magnetic field data for beam composition measurement
  • Issue with cooling of the front end electronics in VTPC-1 on Friday afternoon:
    • unable to take planned physics data during the weekend
    • instead, not to waste the beam we measured total cross sections of p, K+ and pi+ on Ti target
    • cooling was fixed on Monday (workaround), faulty PLC was replaced yesterday
  • we started physics running on Monday afternoon
  • VERTEX magnets went down on Tuesday at around 16h00
    • according to cryo there was a contact problem in the interlock circuit for the helium pumps
    • cryo recovered during the afternoon and night
    • we switched the magnets back on yesterday around 14h00

H4

H4 Main: GIF++ (Martin Jaekel & Giuseppe Pezzullo)

• Test beam runs fine with 12 setups running in parallel. Some experiments had issues with readout electronics and one setup needed to swap some noisy chamber.
• If good beam for the rest of the week, all setups should be able to complete their program.
• Sharing beamtime works (as usual) fine with RD51, with 3 fixed access times for them during the day.
• As reported last week, (about the surprise in terms of material inserted in the gamma field we had with a setup), it has been decided that they will be moving out of the gamma field this weekend, in order to give the possibility to the others setups, standing on the back, to take data for calibration without any shadow.

H4 Parallel: RD51 (Yorgos Tsipolitis)

Things are running smoothely. All groups take good data. The group that was to run in GOLIATH will not take data because their detector has not yet arrived from US and they will participate at the August period. The electron run that was scheduled last night due to the problems of SPS was canceled. There is one more electron run for tonight.
A comment concerning safety: on the Jura side all lights are off during the night that makes it dangerous since we cannot see anything. May be a few safety lights could stay on.

H4 incoming: ECAL CMS (Chiara Amendola)

ECAL spare supermodule equipped with Phase 2 readout electronics for timing and energy resolution assessment.

  • supermodule and services already in place (PPE164) and installed since 04/07
    • safety inspection made on the installation day
  • we will need pure e± beam (∆p/p = 0.5% with 20 < p < 250 GeV , 1-10kHz) to make energy scans
  • we plan to move the supermodule away from PPE164 at the end of august (tentatively 29/08)

H6

H6 Outgoing Main: EP PIXEL (Dominik Dannheim)

  • Efficient data taking at high rates (further tuned by Dipanwita and Laurie to ~6E6/spill in H6B, thank you!). Completed all planned measurements for three different devices: rotation scans for Timepix3 iLGAD and FASTPIX, timing measurements with DPTS.
  • Good collaboration with parallel / parasitic users (MONOLITH, MALTA, EXFLU). Trying to minimise and combine accesses, and to schedule them during low-duty-cycle periods during the day.
  • Issue with radiation alarm from high muon flux during access in H6B while H6A is running at high intensity was fixed by Laurence by combining beam-off for the two zones H6A and H6B. Next step would be to keep the beam on in H6A, but automatically reduce the beam intensity during access to H6B.

H6 Main: ATLAS HGTD (Stefano Manzoni)

We have started the installation yesterday and we got the safety clearance this morning. We are working on finalizing the DAQ using EUDAQv2 which is going to be used for the first time in HGTD testbeam. Once DAQ is ready, we will start the datataking (expected this afternoon or tomorrow morning).

H8

H8 Main: ATLAS TILECAL (Giulio Usai, Tigram Mkrtchyan)

Delay in receiving the upgrade electronics (only Wednesday at 12h). The installation of upgrade electronics was completed by Friday but had some issue with the synchronisation of the readout.
we started the program with MAPMT and this was completed over the week-end while in parallel we debug the issues.
on Sunday we started the muon program over all the modules and completed on Monday.
Then started the electron program but had huge dead time with the DAQ not operational due to Central ATLAS DAQ update that affect our setup.
We resume Tuesday night, then again had some synchronisation issues that are still being investigated.
Some issues using the Cherenkov.
We plan to continue the electron program in the next day and start with hadrons on Friday.

H8 Incoming Main: MGTD TRD - Week 29 (Julia Velkovska and Yulia Furletova)

Shipments of equipment are expected at CERN between July 14 - 17. Storage area requested in EDH for 887/R-Q26. There will be 8 boxes arranged on 3 pallets with total weight 300-400 kg. I checked the form – it is completed now. The internal transport is scheduled for July 17.

Yulia had a techincal meeting with Michael Lazzaroni on June 29th. Desy table, and other techical details + contact information received.

The team members will arrive at CERN between July 14-17. Some of our team members do not yet have CERN accounts and working with USER office to secure them on time.

Safety inspection is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon on July 19.
