PS Machine Report (Denis Cotte)

It was a pretty good week for the PS machine with 98% of beam availability from Thursday to Thursday.

  • Only short beam interruptions over the week. (few minutes)
  • The longest beam interruption occured yesterday. An access to repair both PS internal dump was needed around noon(1h30 of downtime)
  • T8 requested intensity reached this week !
  • successful test for CHIMERA with ion beams from 500Mev-> 2Gev yesterday

SPS Machine Report (Please Add Your Name Here)

Safety / Radiation Protection (Laura Rowland)

All good from Safety this week - thank you for submitting ISIECs on time and being prepared for your inspections.
Reminder that the EP Safety Office will not be at CERN tomorrow (7th September) for the bank holiday.

nToF (M. Bacak)

Physics running smooth:

  • EAR1: 12C(n,cp) and 27Al(n,cp) with an array of NTD silicon detectors and GEMPix respectivly.
  • EAR2: 26Al(n,cp) running stable
  • NEAR: access today to install passive SiC detector irradiation

Proton beam quality and avg. intensity are excellent.

East Area Beam Status (L. Nevay)

T09: Smooth operation. No issues.
T10: Some brief failures of magnet T10.BHZ027, otherwise smooth operation.
T11: No user.

East Area Users Tour de Table

T8 Main: IRRAD/CHARM (F. Ravotti / S. Fiore)

Very good week, no issue with operation. Weekly intensity level above the target value (>2.3e16 p/w, see plot below). Beam alignment and center on both X- and Y-axis (e.g. number of spills centered within +/- 2mm): 98% on the horizontal and 99% on the vertical plane respectively.

During the ongoing access, we are exchanging the dosimetry and replaced samples (RD50, CMS-BRIL, etc.) for most of the long-term users and installed new experiments for iFAST project and Fibre Optic RH/T Sensors (ATLAS ITk). In CHARM we are modifying setups for TE-CRG and BE-CEM, and installing new one from CMS. Once finished, Ion MD will also test detectors on the Montrac.

In the afternoon, when access is finished (and until the end of the PS afternoon shift [~21:30]), second CHIMERA/HEARTS ion MD with beam propagated downstream to T8. Then we resume proton irradiations until next wednesday.

T9 Main: RE44 HERD (Davide Serini - INFN Bari)

Beam very stable and reliable.

Current plan:

• we are taking data with 5 GeV muon for the calorimeter calibration (scan in position)

• today we will switch to electrons for TRD calibration (1-5 GeV)

Due to the first couple of days of “commissioning” that had some delays we canceled the Beam Test survey for the laser measurement of the various DUT positioning in the Beam Line

On 11th September all the detector (except for PSD and TRD) will be transfered to SPS area for the “parasitic” (CMS HGCAL) high energy run. For the PSD and TRD we will make runs with 10 GeV pions up to 13th September

T9 Incoming Main: VLAST - Week 37 (Jingjing Zang)

All detectors are in the building 157 now. Devices self checks are completed and ready for beam test.
Infrastructure requirements:

  1. PID Detector (in beam line)
Threshold Cherenkov Detectors and CO2 gas, (TTL output)
    user manual, performance document?
  2. Scintillators (in beam line)
used for trigger detector, (TTL output)
  3. User Magnet
    to separate gamma-rays from electrons
  4. 2~3 tables
to hold crates and DAQ computers

T10 Outgoing Main: MPGDCAL (Anna Stamerra)

  • Very smooth data taking:
    • X&Y scan and energy scan from 11 GeV to 2 GeV performed with no issue;
    • rate scan not performed but because of a low acquisition rate from our daq; prefered to acquire more data for the energy scan;
    • stable beam and nice operation of XCETs for vetoing electrons and muons.
  • Setup already dismounted and ready to be trasported.
  • Great support from all the PS teams; a big thank you!

T10: RE7 GAMMA MEV (Please Add Your Name Here)

T10 Incoming Main: BL4S - Week 37 (Sarah Zoechling, Ahmed Wasif)

This year, two winning teams of high school students will visit CERN in September (Weeks 37 & 38) to perform their experiments

  • with a Halbach array style magnet - 2 different dipole and 1 quadrupole configurations (Team “Myriad Magnets” from the USA) and
  • a series of measurements to characterise the beam composition of the T10 beamline (Team “Particular Perspective” from Pakistan)

We aim at a combined setup for both experiments and will use the testbeam in week 37 & 38 to

  • characterise the different magnet configurations
  • Verify some earlier beam composition measurements done by Maarten van Dijk et al via XCET pressure scans (Q2 2023) at selected energies for the positive beam and extend the data with results from our ToF and Calorimeter measurements (where applicable) and also cover negative beams at several different beam energies.

We would like to thank all persons and groups at CERN who help and support BL4S!

Announcement: Would you like to support the winning teams during the analysis of their experimental data?
The data analysis slots are max. 2hrs long. Some goodies of your choice come as a thank you (e.g. a BL4S t-shirt in the new special edition “Data Analyst”). AWAKE (Please Add Your Name Here)

North Area Beam Status

Beamlines H2, H4, H6, H8 (L. Nevay)

H2:Normal operation - no issues. Next test for the “moving beam” slot proposed for 11.09 @ 16h00 - 18h00
H4: Normal operation - no issues.
H6: Normal operation - no issues.
H8: Smooth operation - no issues.

Beamlines P42-K12 and M2 (L. Nevay)

M2: Operation ongoing. XCMH071752 checked on Tuesday. Aperture opening confirmed and reading of the jaws are also ok for now. Potentiometer to be replaced during the YETS.
P42/K12: Good week, only some minor issues with quadrupole trip and wire chamber profile over the last weekend, no relevant downtimes.

North Area Users Tour de Table

Beamlines P42-K12 and M2

K12-P42 Main: NA62 (Sergey Kholodenko)

  • During the past week, the data-taking was going very smoothly.
  • Sunday-Monday: The first time we observed variation of the particle rate during the spill ~ 600 MHz. Typically it’s around 1000 MHz.
(counting particles every 1 ms between 2nd and 5th seconds after SOB)

We experienced a couple of issues:

  • Monday morning: broken(again) network switch (SEU?). Previous issue with the switch was 07-Aug.
  • Tuesday: ECN3 patrol lost (forced/broken door). The area has been patrolled well before the beam arrives. No impact on data-taking
Thanks to all the teams, all issues were fixed quickly.

M2 Outgoing Main, Parasitic: MUONE (C. Ferrari)

Data tacking ongoing (carbon target inserted two days ago). We collected about 100 GB of data. First plot of elastic scattering produced last night. High rate calorimeter DAQ will be tested tonight (ECAL running at low rate so far). The plan is to take data until Sunday morning with thinner target (2 cm), then we lower the calorimeter and keep the trackers in place for the parasitic run.

M2 Main, Outgoing Parasitic: AMBER (Please Add Your Name Here)

H2

H2 Outgoing Main: LHCB ECAL (L. Martinazzoli)

The excellent beam for the whole week allowed us to test several Shashlik and SpaCal configurations. Studied:

  • Time resolution of Shashliks with different PMTs
  • Energy resolution and response homogeneity of SpaCal with multiple readout configurations, including light mixers, hollow light guides, etc…)

NOTE: Report by Loris Martinazzoli about not properly communicated and planned intervention access by other users. Reason was a change in the availability of beam, the intervention was initially scheduled around MDs. Agreement by PS & SPS Physics coordinator, SBA physicists that such interventions should be better communicated & announced in the PS & SPS user meeting.

H2 Main: NA65 (Akitaka Ariga, Toranosuke Okumura)

  • Installing the setup, safety inspection at 2pm, no major problem so far.
  • Big thanks to Michael Lazzaroni and CERN team!
  • Start beam tuning and test with emulsion in Wed evening.
  • Target mover test on Thursday (meanwhile low energy hadron beam to H4)
  • Physics data taking with primary protons from Friday.

H4

H4 Outgoing Main: GIF++ (Please Add Your Name Here)

H4 Outgoing Parallel: RD51 (Yorgos Tsipolitis)

Good beam conditions and all users got good data.
However, yesterday after the MD, when the users were trying to get the last data, the beam was not good as we learned after calling CCC (mainly pions???). The result was that 2 detectors were damaged. It would be nice if it is known that there is a problem with the beam to be anounced on the screens.
This was our last test beam as RD51 and from next year on we will be DRD1. Many thanks to Nkos, Bastien, the safety group, the crane people and all the supporting groups for the excellent collaboration.

H4 Main: ALICE FOCAL (Yury Melikyan)

Testing the performance of a prototype of the ALICE’s forward calorimeter for LHC RUN4.
Not much updates compared to last week due to the displaced meeting date. FoCal not yet istalled - RD51 removals up to ~11h;

FoCal installation with crane requested for 11h;
Patrol rights training at 14h;
Safety inspection at 17h30.

Preliminary schedule of beam parameters agreed with Nicos and NA65 team:
Wednesday evening + night: Primaries in H2 / Electrons & high energy hadrons in H4
Thursday daytime: Hadrons in H2 / Hadrons in H4
Friday morning : Primaries in H2 / Electrons & high energy hadrons in H4
Schedule for further days and top/bottom limits on hadron momenta to be clarified later today/tomorrow.

H4 Incoming Main: CMS HGCAL - Week 37 (Arnaud Steen)

Plan to test two setups with silicon modules

  • 1st setup with various type of silicon modules until 18 of September. These modules will operated with same teststand as last year
  • 2nd setup with 2 silicon modules and the full HGCAL electronic chain (similar DAQ system as in August)
  • Goals : calibration with MIPs and study module performance with large energy deposit with EM showers

Beam requirement:

  • electron beam : 20-300 GeV, >10K part/spill
  • muon and pion beam : 100 GeV

H6

H6 Outgoing Main: ATLAS HGTD (Djamel Boumediene, Stefano Manzoni)

  • The setup was dismantled this morning.
  • We took good data: testing new pre-production LGADs for HGTD at different configurations (angles, irradiated/non-irradiated, bias voltages). All the program was covered.
  • No particular issue to report.

H6 Outgoing Parallel: RD42 (Please Add Your Name Here)

H6 Outgoing Parallel: AIDA INNOVA WP6 (Please Add Your Name Here)

H6 Wed 6th - Thurs. 7th night Higher Intensity

H6 Main, Incoming Parallel: CMS PIXEL (Davide Zuolo)

  • We started setting up at 10 am once the preious user were done
  • Safety inspection is scheduled at 5 pm
  • For the high intensity data taking we are in contact with the other users
  • We have in total 6 irradiate single chip assemblies to be tested along the 2 weeks

H6 Parallel, Incoming Main: ATLAS ITK PIXEL (Please Add Your Name Here)

H8

H8 Main: ATLAS TILECAL (Giulio Usai, Tigram Mkrtchyan)

We are progressing well in the program.
The study of response with electrons and muons of the upgrade modules is well advanced.
Today we use the MD time to install the MAPMT in one new cell.
(reminder) This is an R&D program for FCC aiming at improving the granularity of a “Tile like calorimeter” resolving the fibre bundle with 8x8 ch PMT.
We will dedicate some time to scan this cell with beam in the next days.

A change a gas is planned on Friday and then we will complete the program with hadrons tuning till the end of our slot next Wed.
(We understand no beam 08:00-20:00 on 12 13 but beam at the night)
On Wed morning we plan to move to garage and to have fences mounted again.

Many thanks to Maarteen and Anna and all infrastructure teams for their availbility and prompt help.

H8 Incoming Main: UA9 - Week 37 (L.S. Esposito)

  • The usual UA9 setup in PPE128 will be installed starting from next Wednesday: the goniometer and Si-strip telescope.
  • The trigger for the telescope has already been set up (thanks to BI)
  • Safety inspection scheduled on Wed 13th at 16:00
  • Required beam: 180 GeV with focus at crystal (usual optics)
  • Data collection will start as soon as the setup is commissioned with beam, typically within one day, and will continue data taking until week 38 (STI).
  • The activities are coordinated between UA9 (week 37) and STI (week 38).
  • The program aims to measure the first crystal assemblies produced at CERN (STI) and crystals for UA9, specifically for the beam merging technique.

H8 Incoming Parallel: TOTEM PPS - Week 37 (F. Garcia)

We expect to carry out the installation on Wednesday. The DUT are four Diamond Detector packages placed into a Roman Pot station, in one by one sequence. This station is on top a DESY table for aligment to the beam.
For tracking the TOTEM triple GEM tracker will be used. The trigger scheme is done by a finger scintillator on a XY movable table.
Is needed a pions beam size of ~1cm rms on X and Y at 150 - 180 GeV.
We anticipate that this slot is not enough for the full campaing therefore, we would like to continue taking data in parasitic, therefore preferable to have pions.

H8 Incoming Parallel: CMS MTD - Week 37 (Giulia Sorrentino)

Sorry, I am not at CERN and can’t attend the meeting today.
We have booked the DESY table and only need to arrange the transportation of our cold box.
We have submitted the ISIEC and are coordinating with Maarten, as well as LHCB, for the beam requirements.

H8 Incoming Parallel: LHCB - Week 37 (L. Martinazzoli)

Installing RICH in PPE138 (+ the TimePix4 Telescope set-up from 20/09) and a SciFi tracker in PPE 168. 1 DESY table in PPE138 (already agreed with M. Lazzaroni).

We would need in PPE168 a pion beam of 4 cm FWHM.

ISIECs submitted.

We are coordinating with Maarten and the other users for the beam configuration.
