From the airport
The Bologna G.Marconi airport (BLQ) is located at about 5 Km from the city centre.
A one way trip by taxi to the city centre takes about 15 minutes.
Alternatively, the main railway station "Bologna Centrale" can be reached in only 7 minutes with the mono-rail Marconi Express., with departures every few minutes. A ride costs about 13 euros. The service starts at 5.40AM and stops at midnight. From the main station, the city center and workshop venue can be easily reached (see below).
From the main train station
Bologna is served by national high-speed trains that connect it to many other major Italian cities (Milan - Bologna takes about 1h, Rome - Bologna about 2h). Tickets and timetables can be found on the websites of the two main train companies: trenitalia and Italo (please note these are two independent companies! tickets bought with one of them are not valid for the other and cannot be exchanged).
The "Bologna Centrale" railway station is very close to the city central area, that can be reached with a 10-15 minutes walk, or by bus or taxi.
Taxis stop in the parking level underground, at the -1 floor (below ground level but above the high-speed tracks).
By car
The main Motorway connection is the A1 ("Autostrada del Sole"), which links Bologna directly to Milan, Florence and Rome and to three other main routes. The A1 can be entered, from Turin, Genoa or Brescia, by the A21, at Piacenza; from Genoa and La Spezia, by the A15, at Parma; from Brenner Pass, Verona, Mantova, by the A22, at Modena. From Trieste, Venice, Padua, on the other hand, the A13 motorway is direct, as is the A14 from Ancona, Rimini and Ravenna.
All the motorways exits lead into the city by-pass (follow the signs "Tangenziale") from which the roads for all directions branch off. The by-pass exit n.7 (Centro - Via Stalingrado) is the more direct one: it leads you on a large road (Via Stalingrado) pointing to the centre. When you reach Porta Mascarella from Via Stalingrado, you should turn left (around the medieval gate) into Viale Carlo Berti Pichat. This is a broad road circling around the city centre, that can be accessed at any of the "Portas".
Important: we discourage attendees to drive all the way to the workshop venue, as it is located in a limited traffic area (signaled as ZTL), with access controlled by cameras. If you need to access this area with a vehicle, please contact the organizers.
Local transportation
Buses. Several bus lines run through the city centre and connect it with the main station and the outskirts. Lines and timetables can be found quite reliably on google maps. Tickets can be bought on board and credit cards are usually accepted.
Bike sharing. Public bikes can be easily found all over the city. They can be unlocked with the app RideMovi. Instructions can be found here (in Italian!).
