Task3 of MMWG. Follow-up resistive magnets design N2

Europe/Zurich
Fulvio Boattini (CERN)

Domink showed final results of his anlysis of the Benchmark problem. Results matched with analysis from UNIBO (Marco B.)

Dominik also stated he has started coupled simulations and had to solve initialization problem of the solver. Work is advancing.

Fulvio has presented few proposal additional analysis for Domink:

1) Computation of losses and magnetic energy of the MAP configuration using the same iron steel as proposed in their paper https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4965683. The design is referred to a gap field of 1.5T, therefore we should repeat the calculations with that value of B.

2) As a second step, we could increase the Bfield to 1.8T and see how it changes.

3) As a third step we could change the steel material with the JNHF-core type (maybe one with 0.2mm thickness) JNHF-Core. These materials have high saturation magnetic flux densities and could represent an alternative to the use of Fe-Co materials. As they are probably very expensive, they should be used only for the poles.

Dominik asked if a GMSH geometry definition was available for the MAP. Marco and Fulvio answered we have in FEMM or Maxwell2D environment. We will see how to mke it available.

Action: provide Python script for geometry to Dominik. (Fulvio)

Marco presented his last contribution to the design of the resistive magnets.

His team performed a preliminary transient simulation of a cylindrical vacuum chamber made of Tungsten. The result shows that the thickness of the valuum chamber has an inpact on the delay and peak value of the field inside the chamber as a consequence of the eddy currents.

What is even more important, losses in the chamber are not acceptable.

Actions for the next meeting:

Unibo-> advances on python script with magnetic model of the dipole as a function of the geometrical dimensions

TUD-> preliminary results of the MAP dipole analysis
