Two recent papers [1, 2] have revisited and extended a method proposed by Arefeva, Faddeev, and Slavnov to calculate the S-matrix from a path integral with fixed asymptotic boundary conditions in Minkowski space. I will discuss these proposals, their properties (unitarity and the dominant scattering configurations) and some applications (soft theorems and scattering on curved backgrounds).
