Membership of Committee
  • Agreement on inviting a member of ECO’s Scientific Advisory Board. Action: Ana will reach out to Michael Doser with an invitation
  • MC: how can the committee better liaise with other seminars at CERN
  • FB: bringing in members of other seminar committees can blur the lines - for public events, there is a need for good communicators.
  • On raising awareness of the public events, with a view to potentially gathering more suggestions:
    • poster with email address where CERNois could send suggestions?
    • ask Alumni team to make call for events?
  • For above - if there is a need for more suggestions. If we do this, would need mechanism for follow-up.
  • CM: suggestion to bring in someone with links to cultural organisations external to CERN. Monica Bello would be a good person to add.
Terms of Reference
  • CM: suggests making explicit that the committee will look at reputational aspects and will call on external experts as needed
  • Action: Ana will work on initial draft prepared by Lila and circulate for feedback and comments.

Public Events Strategy
  • AG: idea of a survey of SGW visitors, to ask "What sort of event would you come to CERN to see"?
    • Several pointed out risk of raising expectations.
Event proposals
  • Gian Giudice’s event - had been approved, with a suggestion to increase diversity. Gian has addressed this concern (see slides)
    • Proposed date is 19 June 2024, either 19h30.20h
    • Action: Ana to confirm date with Gian
  • Temps en Temps - had been approved some time ago, pending cost
    • Cost considered reasonable for such and artistic event. So OK
    • Date - 19 Nov 2024…or Feb 2025.
    • Action: Ana to confirm date with proponents
  • Dance avec l’evolution
    • The committee's view is that if evolution is not featured in the joint exhibition with the Geneva NHM, then difficult to have this event as a stand-alone since the topic is far removed from CERN's research
    • Action: Ana to get back to proponents with this caveat and that more will be known in early 2024. Also, follow up with Emma for evolution in the exhibition
  • Magic and Science Academy
    • The committee keeps decision to accept.
    • Action: Ana and Loraine to find a date. Also, look into the option of it being featured as a science show
  • Quantum Lovers
    • Wait for proposal from GAOS, which Ana has requested
  • Creation (new proposal)
    • clear yes! from the Committee
    • no immediate logistic obstacle
    • Action: Ana to follow up with the proponent. Also ask about possibility of collaboration with the CERN choir
  • The universe in a grain of sand
    • CM: film and debate/conversation
    • CM and PG: could fill in gap of no Sparks! next year. Recommend taking place in 2024
    • Action: Ana (and Tim) to liaise with MArk Levinson for a Sparks!-related event in 2024.

Next meeting - in around 3 months time
  • Send Newdle to find a date.
