Building the First Carbon Therapy Center in North America: The Mayo Clinic Florida Experience 45m

Abstract: Mayo Clinic in Florida is currently building the first Carbon-Ion Therapy Center in the Americas. Though Ion Therapy originated in the United States over 4 decades ago at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory, there have been no ion treatments in the US since the early 1990s. In this presentation, we will explore the history of Ion Therapy, examine the current and near future of this modality around the world, and finally focus on the challenges of bringing Carbon-Ion therapy to the United States. We will also review the equipment details of the Mayo Clinic Florida Project and the personnel working to bring this exciting project to fruition.

Speaker: Prof. Laura Vallow (Department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic Florida)
