Background

30kCHF in 2024 for designing new instrument(s) + 30kCHF in 2025 for producing new instrument(s)

Chat with OP

The highest wish is transversal profile monitoring, preferably non-destructive …  GSI are working (presented at ECool conference in Montreux ..) on a IPM system, that looked interesting (info from Davide).

Intensity (calibrated) is of high interest, in ring, also for DC part and in transfer line before all experiments …

ELENA ring:

There are no plans to break vacuum …. There are several requests on the “free space” in sector 1.

Transfer lines:

An vertical test line is under preparation (in the line going to ALPHA) this will be a place where we could test different equipment, expected to be available from next year (but not yet guarantied)

The AD operation team have survived with few SEMs, and estimates that it would be interesting to exchange half for the SEMs with BPMs assuming that  the BPMs will be able to monitor the single bunch positon …. There are not unlimited space and the SEM positions are the preferred also for beam position …. i.e. easies would be if a BPM could physically replace 1:1 = same size.

If ever we design instruments that are intended for the ring and they could, beside intensity, provide RF with the phase information, longitudinal  Schottky signals … there are no special needs for the two “magnetic transformers” in sector 2 ….. i.e. it would make sense to design our units to fit this position even though there is no plans to break vacuum (take these transformer’s out).

If we insists on having test in the ring … it is more likely to find a spot in the AD …. Where there are discussion on opening the vacuum, the beam is (almost) the same, but they have a BCCCD i.e. no desperate need for more intensity measurements…

All equipment must be meet high vacuum demand (i.e. bake-out 250C)

Summary (chat with OP)

Here are the main points I take from this:
  • OP "would like" BPMs (able to measure bunch-by-bunch position) to replace ~50% of the sem grids
  • new instruments for the ring should be designed to replace the LPU (low + high freq ensemble) in sector 2, although there are no plans to break vacuum
  • new line towards alpha - alpha would be interested in knowing the intensity before the experiment

Questions:
  • if we ever decide to go for a test in the AD ring, is there space in the sector where they are discussing to open the vacuum?
  • the bake-out is valid for both the AD and ELENA rings? Also in the TLs?
    • ELENA ring + ejection lines = 250degC (actually LPUs in the ring are only baked to 220degC, this was negotiated with RF)
    • AD vacuum is 10 times worst than in ELENA so less strict bake-out necessities

Notes

  • 63mm-66mm inner and outer diameters in ELENA ring & ejection line (where there is nothing special, e.g. sem grids where the diameter is 220mm)
  • ELENA electrostatic orbit pick-ups: aperture = 66mm but pipe is 100mm
  • ACTION (Ole): Gather dimensions (available longitudinal space + flanges + beam pipe diameters + aperture) in a table for: LPUs (ELENA ring), Sem grids (ELENA ejection line), transverse Schottky PUs (AD ring), new line before alpha
  • ACTION (Diogo): book follow-up meeting for early March
