PS/SPS User Meeting
PS-SPS Users Meeting for Week 10 held on March 14th, 2024
The agenda for this meeting is based upon user schedule v1.0.0, please cf. here.
News from the PS & SPS Physics Coordinator (E.B. Holzer, M. Jaekel)
-
Next week: Annual beam line meetings for SPS lines H2/H4, H6 and H8: All proton beam users that are currently scheduled either in the released schedule version or in the DRAFT schedule version are expected to attend the meeting for their beam line.
https://indico.cern.ch/category/6400/ -
Exceptionally showing the not yet released (that is DRAFT) runs within the user scheduling tools (second half of the year 2024) – as baseline for discussion.
-
Only runs in schedule v1.0.0 are released and can be considered stable.
- User Schedules v1.0.0 (for most of the lines until June) released: see User Webpage
- Separation between main / parallel and fully parasitic still to be done (mostly to happen after the ‘beam line meetings’).
- Please get in contact, if you want to take one of the week still free before June - Tetiana is collecting all requests.
- Possibility that the 2024 proton run gets extended (draft injector schedule alread in EDMS).
- Proton and Ion beam users: Please add “Exclusion Periods” until 9th December 2024, if you are concerned by this possible extension.
Very high overbooking, in particular at the end of the proton run
–> Even if the run get’s extended not all the requested beam time can be scheduled!
–> Users scheduled in parallel are often not fully compatible - requiring to operate in ‘time share’ mode!
–> Consider taking one of the available slots in the first half of 2024!
–> The slots which are currenlty marked as DRAFT in v1.1.0 are very likely to be moved by several (order of 6) weeks.
–> Should the proton run not get extended, several of the slots currently marked as DRAFT will have to be cancelled or shortened!
- Reminder: All beam time exceeding the limits of 2 weeks PS beam time and 1 week SPS beam time (added proton and ion beam time!) per year need the approval of one of these CERN committees: SPSC, LHCC, DRDC, INTC, RB or IEFC.
- Consider joining a DRD collaboration, if you require more beam time.
News from the Facilities Operations Meeting (FOM) (E.B. Holzer, M. Jaekel)
- Expected to start physics in time (maybe earlier if set-up goes very fast)
- Collecting requests for running during LS3 -> will send email to e-group

nToF (M. Bacak)
Beam permit in the process of signing.
DAQs already taking calibration data.
Last “aesthetic interventions” for experiments in all EARs.
Experiments will be ready for beam Friday (after)noon:
- EAR1: 28,29Si(n,g)
- EAR2: 88Zr(n,g) test, enriched Gd detector test for ESS,
- NEAR: TOF measurements with diamond detector
East Area Beam Status (D. Banerjee)
General: Hardware commissioning successfully completed, now beam commissioning for all secondary lines and for T08.
T09 - 15 GeV/c mixed hadron beam tested. Other optics and energies being checked now. Leak in high-pressure XCET fixed. BI commissioning ongoing in parallel. On Monday the T09 target and BTV was found to be vertically misaligned, a check with survey was done and with CEM piquet it was found to be a wrong origin calibration of the motor which has been fixed.
T10 - beam commissioning proceeding well, initial tests completed. Tests for XCET mirror reflectivity starting today.
T11 - beam commmissioning going well. Nominal beam rates and profile found. Tests to continue in coming days.

T8 Incoming Main: IRRAD/CHARM (Week 12) (F. Ravotti)
T8 beam commissioning started on Monday. Issues with T8 user timing and XSEC signals to IRRAD solved in the previous days. Continue proton beam steering, BI checks, and characterization of proton beam. For next week: detailed calibrations (Al foils in IRRAD, etc.), longitudinal profile measurements with various spill lengths, radiation field measurements in CHARM, etc. Plan to begin user experiments before the Easter weekend.
T9 Main: SHiP (Annika Hollnagel)

Current status / operations & plans:
- CERN chain hoists to be replaced with identical ones from Freiburg on Thursday 2024-03-21
- WOM optical sensors will be replaced with newly produced ones from Berlin on Friday 2024-03-22
- eMUSIC preamplifier boards currently removed for testing in Freiburg, to be replaced on Friday 2024-03-22
- Improved optical coupling design will be implemented on Friday 2024-03-22
- Possible addition of small ‘trigger box’ detector or displacement of our beam telescope for smaller effective beam spot
- Detector setup decommissioning meeting on Friday 2024-03-15
Start of beam exposure & data taking planned for Friday 2024-03-22:
- Extensive program with detailed scans of the prototype detector at several angles & inclinations
- Muon runs (5 / 10 / 15 GeV):
- beam spot: as focused as possible
- rate: ~1000 particles / spill (current DAQ limited - higher rates will not hurt, but also not help)
- as many spills as possible :)
- Later electron runs (~5 GeV):
- no need for Cherenkov detectors
The 2023/10 beam exposure (and also winter shutdown time) has been very instructive and helpful for our detector R&D! We learned a lot and managed to implement quite some improvements already. :)
Than you so much for your support!

H8: MADMAX (Pascal Pralavorio)
MADMAX collaboration week is organised at CERN 13-15 Mar – therefore it was not possible for me to attend the meeting.
Since last week, data taking continued smoothly and stopped Tuesday 12-Mar to prepare for the second prototype test. During the test time, Morpurgo magnet was put at 1.0 T, below nominal 1.6 T following some cryogenic limitation (see previous report)
The second prototype (so called G10-CB100) to be tested is presently installed with its own cryogenic installation close-by Morpurgo magnet (LHe tank installed on the downstream platform). After cool down during the week-end, the physics run will take place Monday-Wednesday of next week. Friday 22-Mar the installation will be removed and Monday 25-Mar the Morpurgo area will be freed.
H8: STRAW TRACKER RD (Katerina Kuznetsova, Temur Enik)
- setup is present at H8dump, work on maintenence/upgrading was ongoing during last two weeks
- should be ready for calibration runs by the beginning of the next week
- safety visit is confirmed for 19.03
