1 - Introduction
The AWAKE project is currently running its 2b programme (same general configuration as run 1). A new configuration (2 plasma cells, 2 electrons sources, etc.) called "2c" is needed after LS3. However, to ensure enough space is available for 2c cables, a full decabling campaign of AWAKE 2b is foreseen.
AWAKE 2c is fully approved and has already received a large part of its budget. The remainig 15MCHF for 2c are expected to be attributed in this year's MTP exercise. The last C&S review dates from 2021, there was a physics review in February 2024, the review panel's very positive review is available on EDMS 3038236.
In order to allow installation of AWAKE 2c, the CNGS target area (currently behind AWAKE, separated by a concrete shielding wall) must be dismantled. Before this dismanltign, teh AWAKE 2b configuration will be removed (except for the laser room TSG40, which remains as is). Any cables present in the CNGS area will be removed by a dedicated nuclear dismantling contractor, not by EN-EL.
After the removal of AWAKE 2b, the entire AWAKE experimantal area (incl. TSG4) will be de-cabled, to ensure space is available for cables needed for 2c.
Chronologically, we have:
15/10/2024 : last proton for AWAKE 2b
15/10-30/11: decomissionign of AWAKE equipment by the users, preparation for transport
1/12/2024-15/2/2025: removal of all AWAKE equipment, by EN-HE
16/2-31/3: decabling of the AWAKE area, by EN-EL - this is being treated by Christian Bernard, a plannign for the preparation (cable list input, identification on list, identification on-site) etc. has been established by Eloïse and Christian.
1/4-30/4: CERN RP and the CGNS dismanltign contractor prepares the emptied AWAKE area and installs work equipment
1/5: removal of separation wall,start of CNGS
