PS-SPS Users Meeting for Week 11 held on March 21th, 2024

The agenda for this meeting is based upon user schedule v1.0.0, please cf. here.

News from the PS & SPS Physics Coordinator (E.B. Holzer, M. Jaekel)

Planning:

  • Exceptionally, the User Meeting will start only at 11:00 on Thursday 21th and 28th March.
  • April 4th, the user meeting will be on zoom only.
  • Physics Coordination from April 2nd until April 24th (inclusive): Martin Jaekel
  • SPS Pb ion User Schedule being prepared by Martin Jaekel
  • Collecting requests for running during LS3 -> please reply to emails sent last Friday
  • This week: Annual beam line meetings for SPS lines H2/H4, H6 and H8: All proton beam users that are currently scheduled either in the released schedule version or in the DRAFT schedule version are expected to attend the meeting for their beam line.
    https://indico.cern.ch/category/6400/

  • Exceptionally showing the not yet released (that is DRAFT) runs within the user scheduling tools (second half of the year 2024) – as baseline for discussion.

  • Only runs in schedule v1.0.0 are released and can be considered stable.

  • User Schedules v1.0.0 (for most of the lines until June) released: see User Webpage
    • Separation between main / parallel and fully parasitic still to be done (mostly to happen after the ‘beam line meetings’).
  • Please get in contact, if you want to take one of the week still free before June - Tetiana is collecting all requests.
  • Possibility that the 2024 proton run gets extended (draft injector schedule alread in EDMS).
    • Proton and Ion beam users: Please add “Exclusion Periods” until 9th December 2024, if you are concerned by this possible extension.

Very high overbooking, in particular at the end of the proton run
–> Even if the run get’s extended not all the requested beam time can be scheduled!
–> Users scheduled in parallel are often not fully compatible - requiring to operate in ‘time share’ mode!
–> Consider taking one of the available slots in the first half of 2024!
–> The slots which are currenlty marked as DRAFT in v1.1.0 are very likely to be moved by several (order of 6) weeks.
–> Should the proton run not get extended, several of the slots currently marked as DRAFT will have to be cancelled or shortened!

  • Reminder: All beam time exceeding the limits of 2 weeks PS beam time and 1 week SPS beam time (added proton and ion beam time!) per year need the approval of one of these CERN committees: SPSC, LHCC, DRDC, INTC, RB or IEFC.
    • Consider joining a DRD collaboration, if you require more beam time.

News from the Facilities Operations Meeting (FOM) (E.B. Holzer, M. Jaekel)

East Area Beam Status (B. Rae)

T09:Comissioning completed for T09 and various optics checked for the upcoming users. 0.2 s spill checked together with BI and PS-OP. Big thanks to them for all the help.
T10: Commissioning close to completion, last data being collected. The line is fully operational. The low-pressure XCET has been outfitted with a new mirror which has been shown to be 64% more efficient in light collection, together with BI. New optics also designed and tested for minimal beamspot and high flux.

Normal beam spot for fully open collimators:

Improved beamspot for fully open collimators:

T11: Beam commissioning finished and beams ready for CLOUD (and P349) around August. Today the T11 shutter was closed until August.

East Area Users Tour de Table

T8 Main: IRRAD/CHARM (S. Fiore / F. Ravotti)

Beam commissioning on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19. With Marc we tested different extractions in slow (bunch timing w.r.t. septa and T8 line activation, bunch length, momentum distribution) and fast mode (intensity change). We compared the response of BLMs in CHARM and SEC in T8 to the different configurations, and understood cause-effect relationships, so that we know why we see changes and what to ask to operators. Beam OFF for access on Wednesday (yesterday) for pulling a cable related to a measuring system inside CHARM and until today morning (request for short access about T11 now completed). Plan is to continue from today with the calibration of the radiation field in CHARM and beam in IRRAD and until beginning of next week.

Current status / operations & plans:

  • test beam crew assembling on site…
  • load test of new chain hoist scheduled for Thursday 2024-03-21 16:30
  • installation of new WOM optical sensors, optical coupling & eMUSIC readout boards until Friday 2024-3-22 noon
  • addition of small ‘trigger box’ detector for more precise beam spot determination

Start of beam exposure & data taking planned for Friday 2024-03-22:

  • (old) setup basically in place - preliminary safety inspection maybe already Thursday 2024-03-21 afternoon?
  • Extensive program with detailed scans of the prototype detector at several angles & inclinations
  • Muon runs (5 / 10 / 15 GeV):
    • beam spot: as focused as possible
    • rate: ~1000 particles / spill (current DAQ limited - higher rates will not hurt, but also not help)
    • as many spills as possible :)
  • Later electron runs (~5 GeV):
    • no need for Cherenkov detectors
  • possible ‘dark count / noise’ /cosmics measurements during maintenance days (or maybe even betweeen spills)

  • detector setup crane interventions in T9: on / by Tuesday 2024-10-09 morning - evening
  • replacement of concrete blocks in T9: Wednesday 2024-10-10 morning - noon

The set-up for running MADMAX Prototype CB100 in a G10 cryostat at Liquid helium temperature was put in place successfully end of last week under the supervision of the CERN cryolab. The cooldown could start Tuesday afternoon after purging the transfer line between the LHe dewar and the G10 cryostat

Physics run at 10 K started Wednesday for 30h first at 1.0 T for 12 h and then at 1.6 T for 14h. The magnet was slow dump this morning at 9:00. Data taking on going at 0T.

The G10 set-up will start to warm up in the afternoon after the LHe dewar will be emptied. A last physics run will be taken during the week-end at warm temperature under 1.6 T magnetic field.

The zone will be freed on Monday morning.

H8: STRAW TRACKER RD (Temur Enik, Katerina Kuznetsova)

  • safety visit done, setup partly ON
  • re-bonding ongoing in parallel for damaged ASICs (reference tracking)
  • calibration started before/after board repairs
