14T+ Magnet Design
25/04/2024: Follow-up meeting
Participants: Juan Carlos, Ariel, Nicolas Peray, Susana, Gloria and Jose
Agenda:
- Ariel to present an update on the status of the 14 T magnetic optimization.
- Gloria to present an update on the status for the 14 T mechanical design.
ARIEL’S UPDATE:
§ Checked impact on removing turns from the upper layer. Gain in conductor is 16% for 3% loss in margin.
§ Checked impact of the mid-plane thickness and pad pocket size. New proposal made (although changes are very small). What could really help is a smaller pole tip, it needs to be checked by Gloria.
§ Started 3D geometry.
§ Started double aperture. Main problem is b2, which can be improved by separating apertures or putting iron in the middle.
GLORIA’S UPDATE:
§ When all impregnated components are bonded, the stresses after cool-down go beyond our established criteria. Different options have been investigated trying to reduce the stress in the inner layer pole turn corner (by reducing the pole stiffness).
§ Proposed solution is a pole with slits that can be 3D printed. Maximum slit thickness is 0.3 mm (considered the maximum groove that can be filled with pure resin without charging it). Sensitivity to vertical key position and interference is very small. Different slit geometries investigated as well.
§ The final proposal is to use the slits together with an elliptical bore to try to improve the contact pressure at nominal current.
ACTION ITEMS:
§ Ariel:
o Check 3 mm pole tip.
o Develop the 3D model.
§ Gloria:
o Check impact of 3 mm pole tip.
o Check impact of having G10 with standard contacts in the groove. Check displacements in the slit area (how much it opens up).
o Make a table with results. Compare circular and elliptical apertures. Compare with and without slits (or holes).
o Check solution with a hole instead of slits (better to have a flat surface for the cables on top).
