07/05/2024: Follow-up meeting

Participants: Juan Carlos, Ariel, Susana, Gloria, Ezio and Jose

Agenda:

-        Ariel to present an update on the status of the 14 T magnetic optimization.

-        Gloria to present an update on the status for the 14 T mechanical design.

ARIEL’S UPDATE:

§  General overview on the results presented last week for Ezio.

GLORIA’S UPDATE:

§  New computations have been made for the cases shown by Ariel on last meeting regarding the geometry of the pad pocket size. Marginal impact on mechanics.

§  The effect of the pole tip size has been also studied. The impact on coil stress is shown for three different pole architectures (full pole, with slits and with holes). The increase in coil equivalent stress is at most 20 to 30 MPa for 1.5 mm thick pole tip. The proposal is to continue with 4 mm pole.

§  Keeping 4 mm thick pole tip, different options for the pole with holes have been analysed in ANSYS. One hole is placed in the upper pole and another one is placed in the lower coil. The material for the hole is G10. Option 5 is proposed (see slides).

§  Finally, an analysis on the impact of the E-modulus of the hole material has been performed with the aim of studying different alternatives for 3D printing. Some better understanding is still needed on the outcome.

§  In fact, the pole holes could potentially be a good alternative for the coil cooling if they are left empty (which is usually a concern for block coils where no coil cooling happens in the aperture).

ACTION ITEMS:

§  Ariel:

o   Present results on the winding tests next week.

§  Gloria:

o   Compute the case where the contact in the pad pocket happens in two planes out of three (up and down).
