14T+ Magnet Design
14/05/2024: Follow-up meeting
Participants: Juan Carlos, Ariel, Nico, Gloria, Elena and Jose
Agenda:
- Ariel to present an update on the status of the 14 T magnetic optimization.
- Gloria to present an update on the status for the 14 T mechanical design.
- Elena to present an update on the 14 T hardway bending winding tests (44 strands x 1.1 mm, 40 strands x 1.0 mm).
ARIEL’S UPDATE:
§ New double aperture designs by adding iron in between coils. Optimization on b5, b3 and b7.
GLORIA’S UPDATE:
§ The results from the different pole thickness with a rigid contact on the midplane have been shown. Results are not very different from the symmetric ones (since the only difference is traction and the positive vertical displacement, which is allowed when the contact is there).
§ Results with the different contacts in between the pad and the pocket have been shown. Results do not change significantly with respect to the previous assumption.
§ Update on the results for the different stiffness of the pole holes (Remember: if we want to 3D print the piece, we can adjust the rigidity of the different pole zones).
ELENA’S UPDATE:
44 strand cable:
§ Results are shown in the slides. General feeling is that the 44 strand cable (1.1 mm strand) looks very “soft” in terms of mechanical response to bending, etc).
§ No correlation between cable stability and hardway bending radius. The hardway bending radius does not change dramatically the cable response.
§ FRESCA2 bending radius is 700 mm and the layer jump is 380 mm.
§ Internal pop-up for all hardway bending radius. It seems related to the easy-way bending radius. It was also there during the easy-way alone tests.
§ The pop-outs are always found in the same place for the hardway and easy-way bending. In the only easy-way tests, the popouts could be removed after pressing them. When the hardway is there, apparently it is not possible to put them back in place by pushing.
§ In principle, we should not expect that the fiberglass braiding will solve our issues on the mechanical stability. Although, some inputs from the conductor section may tell us that it can help a bit.
ACTION ITEMS:
§ Ariel:
o Check MQXF 3D model to understand how to extrude iron parts separately in ROXIE.
§ Gloria:
o Repeat the computations with rigid contact assuming a gap between poles.
o Plot stress and displacement in the pole for the different pole thickness.
o Plot coil stress after loading for the different pole thickness.
o Compute the effect of the pole holes’ stiffness for different coil modulus.
§ Elena:
o Repeat tests with 15 mm easyway bending radius, to check if we can get rid of the issues related to easyway bending (pop-outs, etc).
