Present: Chiara, Dietrich, Gerald, Jan, Ulrich
1/ Chair election:
- We agreed on a rotation of the chair of 6-12 months
- Ulrich will start as chair, Dietrich as deputy
- Dietrich will take over after the agreed period
2/ DELPHI status: Ulrich presented a few slides on the current situation
Data preservation:
- we should ensure that we have an external copy of the data.
Now that he data is open it is easy by simply mounting /eos and
copying the data from there.
- Ulrich recently chatted with Jiri Chudoba on the topic. Action: get back to him
- We used to have a copy in Santander. Action: Chiara will contact them to check the status of the copy
- Note: the current stack supports reading the data from anywhere by simply setting $DELPHI_DATA_DIR to the tip of the data location.
Default: DELPHI_DATA_ROOT=/eos/experiment/delphi/castor2015
- Ulrich mentioned the initative of ALEPH to go for EDM4HEP. The position of DELPHI is that if they have free cycles we are happy for them to do it. They should keep the board in the loop on what they do. Action: Ulrich contact Marcello on this
Software preservation:
- Ulrich mentioned if anybody remembers if there are dependencies on Fluka (Ulrich didn't spot any) which is used by Geant3. delsim has a dependency on geant3, however, no calls to any of the Fluka routines have been spotted so far. Chiara suggested to check with Sharka. Background are ongoing licensing issues around Fluka. Action: Chiara will contact her on this.
- Ulrich mentioned that IDEA is making issues. It is still provided but would definitely need some love. One issue is related to the fact that it is based on shared libaries which will not work as soon as it uses 64bit CERNLIB (or parts of it) due to 32bit memory mapping issues.
- Ulrich mentioned that it would be nice if we could pimp up the current build pipelines with actual tests.
- Ulrich mentioned that an Apple port is on the way. The analysis framework already works, the event display is work in progress, simualtion and reconstructions still need to be done. OPAL made some very good progress on this already.
Documentation:
Jan mentioned the personal archives of Ugo Amaldi : Action Chiara will contact him to check if we can recover some of the missing documents from these archives, or more valuable documentation. Might be these: https://sis.web.cern.ch/archives/CERN_archive/guide/experimental_physics/LEP/isadelphi
Analysis preservation:
- Ulrich to ping Marcel to make the invisible Higgs search code available
- Any other still existing analysis code should be added to the gitlab.cern.ch/delphi repository
OpenData:
- There was agreement to start to work on publishing the data on the opendata.cern.ch portal. This is the easiest way to implement FAIR principles, and the basic building blocks should already exist.
- Dietrich and Ulrich will start to work on this, probably over summer.
- Dietrich did some excellent work already to extract data as csv files. This work was used by a summer student to redo the line shape analysis with 1991 data. The work was performed using python notebooks. The results were indicating missing data, however, so far it is not clear where the discrepancies with the published results come from. Ulrich mentioned that the data was reprocessed in between which may make a difference on the published calibrations. Action item Chiara will resend this analysis to Gerald/Jan.
The code is available in https://gitlab.cern.ch/delphi/phystool and https://gitlab.cern.ch/liko/phystool .
Demo:
Web pages could be enhanced by adding some quick - start video howtos.
