The Search for New Physics Through Precision Measurements 1h

The discovery of the Higgs boson and the subsequent measurements of many of its properties is a huge triumph of particle physics, with experimental data for the most part agreeing very well with the predictions of the Standard Model. Furthermore, to date searches for new physics at the LHC probe new interactions around the TeV energy scale in many scenarios, with no indication of any beyond the Standard Model effects. Precision measurements are thus crucial for discovering new physics and require experimental measurements with small uncertainties, theoretical predictions in the Standard Model to the highest possible accuracy, and theoretical predictions in effective field theory extensions of the Standard Model to high accuracy. Only when these three ingredients come together can we hope to discover new physics in the absence of the discovery of new particles.

      Speaker: Sally Dawson (BNL)
